Undetected Breast Cancer Killing Thai women | Pattaya Daily News ...

Breast cancer is becoming a worrisome killer in Thailand, according to the Department of Health. On the average, every two hours a Thai woman dies from breast cancer. Women in high risk categories are those who had an early menstruation or are over 40 years old.

Dr. Somyot Deerassamee MD, director general of the Department of Health, recently completed a field study in Chonburi to study breast cancer screening with X-ray mammogram machines.

Among Dr. Somyot?s findings was that although breast cancer is less common than cervical cancer, it tends to result in more fatalities. In many cases there are no symptoms to alert women of the breast cancer, until it?s too late. Breast cancer is more common in women who had menstruation at an early age, and women older than 40, he said.

In recent statistics, there were 13,184 new breast cancer cases, resulting in 4,665 deaths, or an average of one death every two hours.

Mr. Somyot said breast cancer is a danger that Thai women cannot ignore. He stressed the urgency of seeking early treatment at any signs of the disease.

Unfortunately, mammogram X-ray machines that screen for breast cancer are only available at larger central hospitals or hospitals in big cities, the doctor said. Additionally, the patient must pay at least 2- to 3000 baht for the mammogram, which is not covered by national health insurance.

Women can also do self-examinations, by regularly feeling for unusual lumps in breast tissue, or have their doctor perform the clinical exam.
