PS Vita second week hardware sales plummet in Japan

Sony's PS Vita portable console launched in Japan on December 17 and one third party report claimed later that 321,000 units of the console were sold in Japan in its first two days. Now a new report claims that sales of the PS Vita have basically dropped off a cliff during the second week of the console's sales in Japan.

AllThingsD.com reports that according to the Japanese research firm Media Create sales of the PS Vita went down to just 72,479 units in the second week of sales in that country. The sales of the PS Vita were just below those of the Playstation 3 console and well below the number one best selling console in Japan, Nintendo's 3DS portable console with 482,200 units sold.

The article speculates that the drastically lower second week sales for the PS Vita might have to do with inventory issues. However, there are no reports that indicate that their is a shortage of PS Vita units on sale. The far more likely explanation is that the PS Vita is priced much higher than current portable game consoles and as such is keeping consumers from purchasing it, even during the normally busy Christmas sales week.

Meanwhile the PS Vita is still set to debut in the US and Europe on February 22. Sony will likely demo US-themed PS Vita launch games at CES in early January.

Is Shift Worker Diet An Occupational Hazard?

60-Second Science60-Second Science | Health

An editorial in PLOS Medicine makes the case for considering the poor eating habits of shift workers, and the associated health risk, as a legally defined occupational hazard. Sophie Bushwick reports.

More 60-Second Science

For shift workers, odd hours usually mean strange sleeping habits and unhealthy meals. And now an editorial in the journal Public Library of Science Medicine takes the position that unhealthy eating associated with unusual working hours could be considered a new form of occupational hazard. Because such eating is a risk factor for obesity and diabetes. [Poor Diet in Shift Workers: A New Occupational Health Hazard?]

More than 15 percent of workers in the United States are employed in shifts, with workers taking over for each other so that the establishment can stay open for up to 24 hours a day. Because some shifts take place at night, employees have their circadian rhythms disrupted, and thus their metabolisms.

Taking round the clock shifts also makes eating a good diet and getting sufficient exercise difficult. A recent study in the same journal found an increase in diabetes risk among nurses who performed shift work. [An Pan et al, Rotating Night Shift Work and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: Two Prospective Cohort Studies in Women]

The editorial suggests not only employee incentives, but also legislation to make healthful diets easy and cheap. It concludes that treating poor eating among shift workers as an occupational hazard is consistent with the history of workplace safety rights.

Chile Churros Accident: Newspaper Must Pay Damages

SANTIAGO, Chile ? Chile's Supreme Court has ordered a newspaper to pay $125,000 to 13 people who suffered burns while trying out a published recipe for churros, a popular Latin American snack of dough fried in hot oil.

The publisher of La Tercera must pay individual damages to 11 women and two men ranging from as little as $279 to $48,000 for one woman whose burns were particularly severe.

The high court's ruling was announced Monday, seven years after the readers burned themselves while trying out the recipe.

Judges determined that the newspaper failed to fully test it before publication, and that if readers followed the recipe exactly, the churros had a good chance of exploding once the oil reached the suggested temperature. Grupo Copesa, which publishes the paper, said it will abide by the ruling.

Days after the recipe was published in the paper's "Woman" magazine in 2004, hospitals around the country began treating women for burns suffered when the dough boiling in oil suddenly shot out of kitchen pots.

Yorvit Torrealba Suspended By Venezuela League: Rangers Catcher Hits Umpire (VIDEO)

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Texas Rangers catcher Yorvit Torrealba has been suspended from Venezuela's professional baseball league for 66 games for striking an umpire.

Torrealba was arguing with the home-plate umpire Friday after striking out. He angrily put a hand on the umpire's mask and shoved him. He was then ejected.

League President Jose Grasso Vecchio called Torrealba's behavior unacceptable and a violation of league rules.

Torrealba plays for the Caracas Lions when not playing in the majors. His agent, Melvin Roman, said Torrealba acknowledges he got carried away in the heat of the moment.

First freely elected Tunisian govt sworn in (AP)

TUNIS, Tunisia ? Tunisia's first freely elected government has been sworn in following a popular uprising earlier this year.

The new government led by moderate Islamist party Ennahda received a vote of confidence in parliament Friday and was sworn in Saturday.

Tunisia threw off decades of authoritarian rule in January and held widely praised elections, but Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali warned the country faces many challenges: high unemployment, pockets of unrest and a stagnating economy.

Tunisia's democratic transition is being closely watched since its revolt led to a rash of similar uprisings across the Arab world.

Its new government is still only temporary, running the country until a new constitution is written and another round of elections held.

(AP) ? Illinois-based Mead Johnson says another batch of tests done on its Enfamil Premium Newborn infant formula found no trace of the bacteria tied to the death of a baby in Missouri.

Preliminary hospital tests indicated 10-day-old Avery Cornett died Dec. 18 of a rare infection caused by bacteria known as Cronobacter sakazakii. The source of the bacteria hasn't been determined, but it can be found in powdered formula.

Avery had consumed Enfamil Newborn formula.

National retailers including Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Walgreen Co., Kroger Co. and Safeway have since pulled a batch of the powdered infant formula from their shelves.

The Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and the Missouri Department of Health are investigating Avery's death.

Mead Johnson said Sunday it shared its test results with investigators.

SkyStar 2 driver error problem fix Windows 7 / latest driver

Many SkyStar 2 PCI users face a problem when reinstalling their DVB-S PCI card to find them selves with a code 10 error for an incompatible hardware after a successful driver installation.

This error is caused by a bad computability for Windows 7 and/or a bad IRQ code set on windows 7, and in my case I managed to fix it by some easy steps, you can try if you have the same problem:

Solution: So to fix the driver problem first uninstall the old driver from your operating system, shutdown the PC and remove the skystar 2 PCI card, start your computer without the card leave it until widows start and then shutdown the computer and install the card back into another PCI ports, start your computer and install the latest driver over Here or Here.

Wish this help you too, if you have any problem please comment bellow.

Google Books for Chrome gets offline support, one less excuse for not reading the 'classics'

Google Books Offline
So, you can read all those tomes you've picked up through Google Books offline on your smartphone and tablet, but what about on your laptop? Well, if for some reason you've got the desire to power through Finnegans Wake in your browser (though, we're not really sure why you'd do that to yourself) we've got good news -- the Google Books app for Chrome now caches your titles for local reading. To download a book, just hover over the cover in library view and select "make available offline" from the pop-up. Then, even when you can't get your Chromebook connected, you'll be able to sit back and relax with a classic novel or seedy romance tale.

Cancer fears as fatty diets trigger 50% surge in acid reflux in just a decade

By Jenny Hope

Last updated at 2:45 AM on 22nd December 2011

Obesity can cause a number of health problems including type 2 diabetes and heart disease

Obesity can cause a number of health problems including type 2 diabetes and heart disease

Obesity could be driving a 50 per cent rise in people suffering acid reflux over the last decade, research suggests.

Concern is mounting because the condition can trigger oesophageal cancer, which is also on the increase.

Reflux ? where acid from the stomach leaks into the gullet, or oesophagus, causing heartburn ? has been linked to obesity, diets high in fatty foods, alcohol and smoking.

The proportion of people suffering from it rose from 11.6 per cent in 1995-97 to 17.1 per cent in 2006-09, the latest study shows.

Women are more at risk than men of developing the condition, known medically as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

Middle-aged people suffer the most severe symptoms, according to the study of almost 30,000 people in Norway published in medical journal Gut.

?

The researchers, from Norway, Sweden and King's College London, said: 'The increasing prevalence of acid reflux is alarming, because it will most likely contribute to the increasing incidence of cancer of the oesophagus.'

Professor Hugh Barr, of the British Society of Gastroenterology's oesophageal section, said occasional reflux affects as many as one in five people.

But persistent episodes of heartburn should be investigated.

Reflux is the type of cancer which killed Christopher Hitchens and is seen as a growing danger

Reflux is the type of cancer which killed Christopher Hitchens and is seen as a growing danger

Prof Barr said: 'Having indigestion after a curry isn't necessarily a cause for concern and about half of those with persistent reflux will not have any damage to their gullet.

'But we need to identify earlier people at risk of what is an epidemic of this type of cancer, and one that has so recently killed the writer Christopher Hitchens.'

Reflux sufferers are advised to lose weight or given acid-suppressing drugs.

The UK has the highest rate of oesophageal cancer in Europe.

Experts say that by not smoking or drinking alcohol, and by choosing a healthy diet, most of the 8,000 oesophageal cancer cases diagnosed each year could be prevented.

Video: Self-healing electronics could work longer and reduce waste

Tuesday, December 20, 2011

When one tiny circuit within an integrated chip cracks or fails, the whole chip ? or even the whole device ? is a loss. But what if it could fix itself, and fix itself so fast that the user never knew there was a problem?

A team of University of Illinois engineers has developed a self-healing system that restores electrical conductivity to a cracked circuit in less time than it takes to blink. Led by aerospace engineering professor Scott White and materials science and engineering professor Nancy Sottos, the researchers published their results in the journal Advanced Materials.

"It simplifies the system," said chemistry professor Jeffrey Moore, a co-author of the paper. "Rather than having to build in redundancies or to build in a sensory diagnostics system, this material is designed to take care of the problem itself."

As electronic devices are evolving to perform more sophisticated tasks, manufacturers are packing as much density onto a chip as possible. However, such density compounds reliability problems, such as failure stemming from fluctuating temperature cycles as the device operates or fatigue. A failure at any point in the circuit can shut down the whole device.

"In general there's not much avenue for manual repair," Sottos said. "Sometimes you just can't get to the inside. In a multilayer integrated circuit, there's no opening it up. Normally you just replace the whole chip. It's true for a battery too. You can't pull a battery apart and try to find the source of the failure."

Professor Scott White and his team of scientists have developed a new way for electronics and batteries to repair themselves. Credit: Katherine Gatsche, University of Illinois

Most consumer devices are meant to be replaced with some frequency, adding to electronic waste issues, but in many important applications ? such as instruments or vehicles for space or military functions ? electrical failures cannot be replaced or repaired.

The Illinois team previously developed a system for self-healing polymer materials and decided to adapt their technique for conductive systems. They dispersed tiny microcapsules, as small as 10 microns in diameter, on top of a gold line functioning as a circuit. As a crack propagates, the microcapsules break open and release the liquid metal contained inside. The liquid metal fills in the gap in the circuit, restoring electrical flow.

"What's really cool about this paper is it's the first example of taking the microcapsule-based healing approach and applying it to a new function," White said. "Everything prior to this has been on structural repair. This is on conductivity restoration. It shows the concept translates to other things as well."

A failure interrupts current for mere microseconds as the liquid metal immediately fills the crack. The researchers demonstrated that 90 percent of their samples healed to 99 percent of original conductivity, even with a small amount of microcapsules.

The self-healing system also has the advantages of being localized and autonomous. Only the microcapsules that a crack intercepts are opened, so repair only takes place at the point of damage. Furthermore, it requires no human intervention or diagnostics, a boon for applications where accessing a break for repair is impossible, such as a battery, or finding the source of a failure is difficult, such as an air- or spacecraft.

"In an aircraft, especially a defense-based aircraft, there are miles and miles of conductive wire," Sottos said. "You don't often know where the break occurs. The autonomous part is nice ? it knows where it broke, even if we don't."

Next, the researchers plan to further refine their system and explore other possibilities for using microcapsules to control conductivity. They are particularly interested in applying the microcapsule-based self-healing system to batteries, improving their safety and longevity.
