China to use twice as much energy as the U.S.

Already guzzling more energy than the United States to feed its power-hungry manufacturing sector, China is expected to use twice as much energy as the United States by 2040.

130725172052-china-us-energy-614xa

This from the U.S. Energy Information Administration's latest International Energy Outlook, released Thursday.

The central theme, which hasn't changed much in the last several years, is that under current policy, the world will use a lot more energy and emit a lot more greenhouse gases by 2040, mostly thanks to its continued reliance on fossil fuels.

Worldwide energy use is expected to grow 56% by 2040. While renewable and nuclear energy are expected to be the fastest growing sources, fossil fuels will still account for nearly 80% of our energy use by the end of the time period. As such, energy-related carbon dioxide emissions are expected to rise 46%.

"That is going to have to be addressed in some way," EIA Administrator Adam Siemiski said during a press conference.

Most of the increase in energy use and emissions is expected to come from the developing world, and Siemiski noted that a rise in energy use in and of itself isn't a bad thing.

"This is rising prosperity," he said. The question is, "how do we accommodate rising prosperity and still maintain a good energy security and environmental outlook?"

Oil prices are also expected to remain high: $163 a barrel by 2040, in 2011 dollars.

Other highlights from EIA's analysis:

China is expected to embark on a nuclear power plant building binge.

And these five countries will be a real pain for OPEC, pumping a big chunk of the world's non-OPEC oil supply. That could?put pressure on the cartel to either cut production or accept lower prices:

Baseball Therapy: I Thought He Was Gonna Get It by Russell A. Carleton

July 15, 2013

by Russell A. Carleton

Ozzie Smith is widely regarded as the best defensive shortstop (and somewhat by extension, the best defensive player) of his era. Anything that was hit into that no-man's land between second and third was gobbled up by the Wizard. In a game that adores offensive numbers, there was something so special about Ozzie's glovework that he ended up in the Hall of Fame despite a career .262/.337/.328 triple slash line.

Plenty of plus-glove shortstops have played in the big leagues over the past few years. Some of them were of the plus-plus-glove, minus-minus-bat variety (Brendan Ryan, Paul Janish), while others have been of the plus-glove, just enough bat to make people believe he's a leadoff hitter type (Andrelton Simmons). And then there's Manny Machado, who has yet to actually play at short in the big leagues.

Teams have always seemed to understand that a particularly good defender is worth a lot, especially at shortstop. Neifi Perez and Felix Fermin played for years, and it certainly wasn't because of their offensive prowess. It hasn't been until recently that we've been able to fully appreciate the value that a good defender can bring. After all, I own t-shirts that are older than the first edition of The Fielding Bible.

Defensive metrics (and baseball metrics in general) still have one big problem. While we can estimate how many outs a fielder personally contributed based on the number of balls he did or did not get to, fielding, unlike hitting, is not an individual endeavor. It's not quite basketball, where all five players on a team might be involved in the play at any time, but what one player does on the field might impact what another does. If the shortstop has a lot of range, it might affect where the third baseman plays. If a center fielder covers a lot of ground, it might make the men on his left and right look better than (or not as bad as) they really are.

In 2000, former BP writer Keith Woolner posed this question as one of baseball's unanswered problems. Can we quantify the secondary effects that a good fielder has on his teammates? Seems a shame to leave an unanswered question unanswered.

Warning! Gory Mathematical Details Ahead!
Most of the publicly available fielding indices are actually based on raw data that are not made public (or at least not made public to me). Fortunately, we do have data from 1993-1999 from Retrosheet that includes the rough location of each batted ball hit during that time. Ideally, our data set would be more fine-grained than this, and there's probably some bias inherent in these data. Then again, ideally, I would be napping in a hammock on a tropical island right now.

Youth Baseball: La Verne moves on to championship game

ONTARIO - Noah Woodall left no doubt Sunday night at Homer Briggs Park that La Verne Little League is clearly the team to beat in the Section 3 playoffs.

Woodall went all four innings in a 10-0, four-inning mercy-rule victory over South Pasadena in the winner's bracket. The La Verne right-hander allowed just one hit and struck out four to advance La Verne to Tuesday night's championship game.

La Verne will play tonight's Azusa-South Pasadena winner at 7 on Tuesday and enjoys a much-needed day off to rest its pitching staff.

Woodall helped his cause at the plate with two hits and two runs, including a two-run shot in the third inning. It was his second home run in as many nights for a La Verne team that is 6-0 thus far in the playoffs.

"I handle pressure situations pretty well and felt good out there tonight," Woodall said. "I was able to spot my pitches well, especially after the first inning and our guys got a lot of clutch base hits and made plays behind me."

Woodall's pitch count wouldn't allow the La Verne ace to throw again until Wednesday night in the "if-necessary" game if they were to lose on Tuesday.

"I have no concerns at all about not being able to pitch until Wednesday, because we have a very deep pitching staff," Woodall said.

Craig Parker's second-inning double was the only offense South Pasadena could muster and it will have to forget this loss quickly, because it will play Azusa tonight at 7 in an

elimination game.

The winner tonight would have to beat La Verne twice to advance to the Sub Divisional in Long Beach.

Joe LaFountain's three-run shot was his second of the tournament and he had two more hits on Sunday. In Saturday's 5-0 win over Azusa, LaFountain hit the first pitch of the game for a home run to set the tone.

"We did a much better job of getting the clutch hits with runners in scoring position tonight," La Verne manager Greg Peplin said. "Noah did a great job on the mound and our offense was definitely our strength as it's been."

Zach Howorth surrendered six runs on six hits in three-plus innings for South Pasadena. Beau Berry was on the mound when Woodall and Max Urrutia scored consecutive runs on wild pitches to end the game in less than 90 minutes.

Brock Johnson had a big game with a solo homer and a double and two runs for La Verne, while Andrew Castro had a two-RBI single in a four-run third inning.

Urrutia scored twice for La Verne in three at-bats.

(AP) ? A judge revoked Chris Brown's probation on Monday after reviewing the details of an alleged hit-and-run accident involving the singer and his behavior afterward. However, the singer was not ordered to jail.

Brown, who came to court with a group of family members, appeared downcast as he sat with his arms across his chest and his head down on the counsel table while his lawyer and a prosecutor went to the judge's chambers to discuss the case.

When they emerged, Superior Court Judge James Brandlin said he had read the file.

"In this matter, probation is revoked," he said.

Brown's lawyer, Mark Geragos, suggested that perhaps the matter will be resolved informally without a major probation hearing. He said the hit-and-run case would be back in court in Van Nuys on July 23.

Deputy District Attorney Mary Murray did not ask for Brown to be jailed, and the judge allowed him to remain free on his own recognizance.

Another hearing is set for Aug. 16.

The singer has been on felony probation in the 2009 beating of former girlfriend Rihanna.

Prosecutors moved to revoke Brown's probation after he was charged last month with misdemeanor hit-and-run and driving without a valid license. Brown has not entered a plea in the case.

The singer has been in and out of court since the Rihanna assault, making reports on fulfilling the requirements of his probation.

In February, the Sheriff's Department investigated a fight between Brown and singer Frank Ocean at a recording studio, but Ocean decided not to pursue a battery case against Brown. The same month, Brown crashed his Porsche while being chased by paparazzi.

Brown's most recent problem stems from a May 12 traffic accident in which he is suspected of rear-ending a car stopped at a red light in the San Fernando Valley and refusing to give the other driver his license or insurance information.

A woman in the car with Brown provided her driver's license, according to a police report that says Brown did not provide his until his lawyer had an investigator deliver an expired insurance card to the other driver several days later.

The driver of a Mercedes Benz involved in the crash told police she was a recent emigre to this country and didn't know procedures.

The woman, identified in court documents only as Olga G., said she called her husband to find out what to do and was told to exchange driver's licenses and insurance identification.

At first, she said Brown was polite. But as she continued to demand identification, a confrontation arose, she said in court documents.

She said Brown's companion, identified as Karrueche Tientrese Tran, offered her driver's license and said the car belonged to her.

In her written statement, the woman said when Brown refused to provide his identification, she took a picture of the couple "and then they went ballistic."

She said Brown began shouting expletives and grabbed for her camera.

"I jumped back, the girl screamed, 'Don't touch her. Don't touch her,'" she said.

"I was so shocked that I was speechless," she said in the statement. "Just a moment ago he was a nice guy. After screaming some insulting nonsense for a while longer, he slammed a door and drove away fast and noisy."

The woman didn't know the identity of the man who hit her car until a friend called and told her after seeing a report on the Internet.

Brown won a Grammy in 2011 for Best R&B Album with "F.A.M.E."

Anyone From Washington/Seattle??

I'm gonna be there for like six nights and am trying to plan things to do.

So far, a trip to North Bend and hiking Mount Teneriffe and Mailbox Peak are at the top of my list. Any other things I can cram into a day using the Discover Pass?

Also what other things would you recommend doing? I'm certainly going to eat a lot and visit Pikes Place. Not really into museum stuff. Maybe a botanical garden? Or some animal reservation parks or something like that? I'm probably gonna do some training at Marcelo Alonsos place too

Vice President Releases Book ?Smritiyan? by Garima Sanjay

The Vice President of India Shri M. Hamid Ansari released a book entitled ?Smritiyan? authored by Smt. Garima Sanjay, a professional author & documentary filmmaker here today. Shri Ansari complimented the author for bringing out a fine book and also wished her good success in her future creative endeavour.

The book says that Life in general throws challenges before we can fulfil our aspirations. At times we beat those challenges, but sometimes, especially in case of our personal and emotional lives, we?re unable to face these challenges and we simply give up, compromise with the situation and accept our failure. In such a situation, we blame our luck; or as shown in stories/ films we blame certain villains in our life for our failures.

Tyson Gay tests positive for banned substance

American 100-meter record holder Tyson Gay has tested positive for a banned substance and says he will pull out of the world championships next month in Moscow.

Gay isn't revealing the substance, but he says he was notified by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency on Friday that a sample came back positive from an out-of-competition test May 16. He says he will have his "B'' sample tested soon.

The 30-year-old Gay fought back sobs in a phone conversation Sunday from Amsterdam, saying: "I don't have a sabotage story. ... I basically put my trust in someone and was let down."

Gay was healthy again this season after being constantly plagued by hamstring and groin ailments, along with a surgically repaired hip. He won the 100 and 200 at nationals last month.

The Government Is Spying On ALL Americans' Digital and Old ...

Posted on July 12, 2013 by WashingtonsBlog

On Friday, June 7, the Wood County Commissioners Court unanimously approved a resolution to Protect the Second Amendment.

The measure affirms the right to keep and bear arms and calls on the state legislature to take steps protecting the Second Amendment. It also urges noncompliance with federal efforts to violate the Constitution.

Resolved that all agencies of the County of Wood County, Texas are instructed to refuse requests or directives by federal agencies acting under unconstitutional powers enumerated in Section 2 above that would infringe upon our residents? second, ninth, and tenth amendment rights, or other inalienable rights not here explicitly enumerated.

The resolution even addresses the supremacy clause issue.

Section 2. All federal acts, laws, executive orders, agency orders, and rules or regulations of all kinds with the purpose, intent, or effect of confiscating any firearm, banning any firearm, limiting the size of a magazine for any firearm, imposing any limit on the ammunition that may be purchased for any firearm, taxing any firearm or ammunition therefore, or requiring the registration of any firearm or ammunition therefore, infringes upon Texans? right to bear arms in direct violation of the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, and therefore, any such law is not made in pursuance of the Constitution, is not authorized by the Constitution, and thus, is not the supreme law of the land, and consequently, is invalid in the State of Texas and shall be further considered null and void and of no effect in this County.

You can read the entire resolution here [PDF].

The resolution isn?t binding, but it is a great first step. Residents now need to seize the momentum and work to pass legally binding ordinances in their city or town of Alba, Hawkins, Mineola, Quitman, Winnsboro, Yantis, and Crow.? And other municipalities in Texas need to follow the lead and do the same.

These measures will not only provide ?practical protections for citizens, they will send a strong message and put the pressure on lawmakers to nullify unconstitutional federal gun laws at the state level in the next legislative session. And if enough localities throw roadblocks in the way of these unconstitutional acts, it will make them ?nearly impossible to enforce? as Judge Napolitano has said.

Local governments won?t act without citizen input and grassroots pressure. The good news is a few dedicated individuals can make a difference at the local level.
