Business investment boosts durable goods orders

By msnbc.com staff and news wires

Businesses bought more machinery last month, lifting orders for long-lasting goods although not as much as economists had expected.

The Commerce Department reported Wednesday that new orders for durable goods rose 2.2 percent in February, after a drop of 3.6 percent in January. Economists had been expecting orders to rise by 3 percent.

"This number is another piece of the puzzle that seems to be coming together to form a picture that the economy is slowly improving, but it is definitely a halting recovery where we're not accelerating to any great degree," said Liam Dalton, president of Axiom Capital Management Inc.

Durable goods range from toasters to big-ticket items like aircraft which are meant to last three years and more.

Excluding transportation, orders climbed 1.6 percent. Economists had expected that reading to increase 1.7 percent. Machinery orders increased 5.7 percent.

Non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for future business investment, edged 1.2 percent higher, missing analysts' expectations of a 2.0 percent gain.

A 3.9 percent increase in bookings for transportation equipment - including a 6.0 percent increase in civilian aircraft orders - drove the overall increase in durable goods orders.

Boeing received 237 orders for aircraft during the month, according to the plane maker's website, up from 150 in January.

Orders for motor vehicles edged up 1.6 percent.

Shipments of non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, which go into the calculation of gross domestic product, rose 1.4 percent in February.

Reuters contributed to this report.

The Importance of Business Travel Insurance

business travel insuranceToday?s businesses do a great deal of communication through the Internet. However, this does not compare to meeting someone face to face to discuss important issues. This involves business travel.

This kind of travel can be for a short distance or half way round the world. As a rule it ordinarily involves airline travel. Due to the heavy costs of maintaining these planes, many companies have reduced the size of their fleet. This has resulted in frequent delayed or cancelled flights. In addition, flights are governed by the weather which can also affect a schedule.

Business trips are often based on timing. An important appointment or conference is not going to change their schedule because someone is late. A business travel insurance policy will cover a delayed or cancelled flight, lost luggage, a sudden illness, a cancelled business event, and other unexpected occurrences. This insurance allows refunds, even on a non-refundable ticket.

It also offers assistance services, such as problems with a Visa or passports, information regarding a country?s immunization requirements, emergency evacuations, and others. This allows the company?s representative to travel without concern regarding possible events that would cause interruptions to their journey.

Not to be forgotten is business travel health insurance. Accidents can happen anywhere and anytime. This type of policy will cover accidental death and dismemberment for the traveler, whether on domestic or international travel. In addition, it covers doctor, hospital, rehabilitation, and other medical expenses.

Many companies carry a blanket policy for all their employees travel. Although it is usually someone in a high position who travels, there are places where couriers are frequently sent to various locations. This kind of business travel insurance is in effect 24 hours a day which is very convenient for a company.

When purchasing business travel or business travel health insurance unforeseen events are covered. If there is no coverage the result can be an upsetting experience, which can be avoided with careful advance planning. This is important in the busy business world.

(AP) ? One Los Angeles institution is buying another.

A group that includes former Lakers star Magic Johnson and longtime baseball executive Stan Kasten agreed Tuesday night to buy the Dodgers from Frank McCourt for a record $2 billion.

The price would shatter the mark for a sports franchise. Stephen Ross paid $1.1 billion for the NFL's Miami Dolphins in 2009, and in England, Malcolm Glazer and his family took over the Manchester United soccer club in 2005 in a deal then valued at $1.47 billion.

Mark Walter, chief executive officer of the financial services firm Guggenheim Partners, would become the controlling owner.

The deal, revealed about five hours after Major League Baseball owners approved three finalists for an intended auction, is one of several steps toward a sale of the team by the end of April. It is subject to approval in federal bankruptcy court.

"I am thrilled to be part of the historic Dodger franchise and intend to build on the fantastic foundation laid by Frank McCourt as we drive the Dodgers back to the front page of the sports section in our wonderful community of Los Angeles," Johnson said in a statement.

As part of the agreement, the Dodgers said McCourt and "certain affiliates of the purchasers" would acquire the land surrounding Dodger Stadium, including its parking lots, for $150 million.

"If they invested that much money, I'm sure they'll invest to get us a winner," said Tommy Lasorda, the Dodgers' retired Hall of Fame manager. "I wish them all the luck, and I admire them. I know both of them. I know Magic from the day he came into Los Angeles as a basketball player for the Lakers."

The acquiring group, called Guggenheim Baseball Management, has several other investors, among them Mandalay Entertainment chief executive Peter Guber, Guggenheim Partners president Todd Boehly and Bobby Patton, who operates oil and gas properties among his investments. Kasten is the former president of the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals.

"I am truly honored to have partnered with such talented individuals and to be associated with the Dodgers organization," said Walter. "We look forward to building upon the legacy of the Dodgers and providing long-term stability to one of the most revered franchises in baseball."

The 52-year-old Johnson played 13 seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers, winning five NBA championships and three MVP awards in a Hall of Fame career.

He retired from the NBA in 1991 after being diagnosed with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. He briefly came out of retirement during the 1995-96 season and had a short stint coaching the Lakers. Since leaving basketball, he has been very successful in business, investing in movie theaters, a production company and restaurants.

He has also been an activist in the fight against HIV.

"I'm upset he didn't cut me in," current Lakers star Kobe Bryant said. "I'm going to have to talk to him about that."

McCourt paid $430 million in 2004 to buy the team, Dodger Stadium and 250 acres of land that include the parking lots, from the Fox division of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., a sale that left the team with about $50 million in cash at the time. The team's debt stood at $579 million as of January, according to a court filing, so McCourt stands to make hundreds of millions of dollars even after a $131 million divorce payment to former wife Jamie, taxes and legal and banking fees.

Kasten is expected to wind up as the team's top day-to-day executive.

The other two finalists were:

? Stan Kroenke, whose family owns the NFL's St. Louis Rams, the NBA's Denver Nuggets, the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids. He also is majority shareholder of Arsenal in the English Premier League.

? Steven Cohen, founder of the hedge fund SAC Capital Advisors and a new limited partner of the New York Mets; biotechnology entrepreneur Patrick Soon-Shiong; and agent Arn Tellem of Wasserman Media Group.

It remains to be seen whether Major League Baseball will challenge the deal in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, where the case is before Judge Kevin Gross.

Under an agreement reached by MLB and McCourt in November, a private auction was to be held among the finalists and McCourt was to select the winner by Sunday. The sales agreement is to be submitted to the bankruptcy court by April 6, ahead of a hearing seven days later, and the sale completed by April 30, the day McCourt is to make a divorce settlement payment.

"This agreement with Guggenheim reflects both the strength and future potential of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and assures that the Dodgers will have new ownership with deep local roots, which bodes well for the Dodgers, its fans and the Los Angeles community," McCourt said in a statement.

The acquiring group would gain the ability to sell the Dodgers' local broadcasting rights starting with games in 2014. The Guggenheim group likely would use money gained from the rights sale ? or from the team's own network with outside investment ? and use those funds to pay down the acquisition debt.

"The amount of leverage is a big question," said Marc Ganis, president of the Chicago-based consulting firm Sportscorp, which is not involved. "The likely scenario is that they have a broadcasting deal in mind so that they pay up now and pay themselves down from a big broadcasting upfront payment.

"The problem with this strategy is that the more paid upfront by the broadcast deal, the less money is available for team operations. The more debt they take on, the more debt service is required, the less money that's available for team operations. With the only beneficiary being the man walking out the door. A challenging result that baseball tried to avoid."

The current record for a baseball franchise is the $845 million paid by the Ricketts family for the Chicago Cubs in 2009.

The Dodgers filed for bankruptcy protection in late June, just days before the team was expected to miss payroll. The filing came after baseball Commissioner Bud Selig refused to approve a 17-year agreement between the Dodgers and Fox's Prime Ticket subsidiary that would have been worth $2 billion or more. MLB feared McCourt would use about half of an intended $385 million cash advance to fund his divorce.

Los Angeles finished third in the NL West last season at 82-79, had just three sellouts and fell short of 3 million in home attendance in a full season for the first time since 1992. There was some concern among MLB officials about the financing of the Walter bid because some of the money was coming from insurance companies that are owned by Guggenheim. A person familiar with the baseball owners' teleconference Tuesday said several team owners voiced that during the call. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because MLB did not make any announcements.

"The problem there is a fundamental problem as you go into an auction, and that is the absolute reliance on other people's money," said Ganis. "It means a lot of regulators. It means either shareholders or, depending on which insurance companies it's coming from, the insured themselves."

Kasten was hired as legal counsel of the Braves and the NBA's Hawks in 1976, and three years later became the NBA's youngest general manager at 27. He was promoted to president of the Braves and Hawks in 1986 and also became president of the NHL's Thrashers in 1999. After leaving the Atlanta teams in 2003, he became president of the Washington Nationals from 2006-10.

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti recently had dinner with Kasten in Glendale, Ariz., the team's spring training home.

"He's very successful, very driven, relentless in his pursuit of excellence," Colletti said. "He's seen a lot and he's won a lot."

The Dodgers have won six World Series titles but none since 1988, when they were still owned by the O'Malley family that moved the team from Brooklyn to California after the 1957 season. Fox bought the team in 1998, then sold it to McCourt.

Colletti, whose baseball moves appear to have been constricted because of the team's financial problems, says the sale announcement brings "clarity."

"It's time to turn the page and move toward a new chapter in the history of the Los Angeles Dodgers," he said.

What is pet fostering? ? Pets For Patriots Blog

Pet fostering provides temporary care to shelter animals who, for a variety of reasons, need to live in a home environment prior to adoption. While pet fostering is ideal for some people, it?s not for everyone.

Why foster homes are needed

Animal welfare organizations work to place?lost, abandoned, abused and relinquished animals in forever homes, which helps relieve overcrowding and reduces an animal?s stress by providing a temporary and supportive sanctuary while it awaits permanent adoption. People who need care for their pets due to emergency or disaster rely on pet fosters while they re-establish their lives. ?And deploying military personnel may need temporary yet long-term pet care if they don?t have friends or family members who are able to make a commitment for the duration of their deployments.

Shelters and rescues try to match dogs and cats with homes that best fit the needs of both the animal and the pet foster?s lifestyle. Experts typically recommend keeping one?s own companion and foster pets apart to minimize potential disharmony. However, many experienced fosters strike a balance between separation and socialization. For example, they may walk their own dogs with their fosters pack-style, but separate them for meals and sleeping.?shelter dog

Is pet fostering right for you?

Many organizations provide their fosters with training, as well as information about the pet?s temperament and medical needs. Fosters are given essential supplies, such as food and access to veterinary care, and a 24-hour emergency number if problems arise.

Pet fosters must remember that they are a vital, but temporary guardian to a dog or cat in need. Most shelters and rescues require fosters to make the pets in their charge available for adoption events, and coordinate drop-off or pick-up of the animals for this purpose.?There are many situations for which a temporary home may be needed:

  • Puppies and kittens that are too young to be adopted
  • Nursing cats and dogs
  • Ill, injured, disabled or other animals that may need regular medication or medical attention
  • Dogs in need of socialization and training in a home or family environment
  • Any animal that is highly stressed in a shelter, particularly older dogs and cats
  • Previously abused, neglected or abandoned animals that need to form a healthy bond with people
  • Animals displaced due to natural or other disaster awaiting reunion with their families

What it takes to be a pet foster

Every adoption organization has its own policies when it comes to fostering. Volunteers need the cooperation of family, as well as flexibility, patience, a compassionate nature and some knowledge of animal behavior. Individuals must apply at their local shelter or rescue and will likely need to attend training. The sponsoring organization may conduct a home visit prior to a first-time foster receiving an animal, and require that an individual?s own companion pets are up-to-date on all vaccinations and fixed (spayed/neutered). Foster parents typically must be at least 18 years of age.

?Foster failures?
Sometimes volunteers becomes so attached to the animals in their charge that they legally adopt them. This is known as a ?foster failure? because the capacity of the volunteer to care for other ?temporary? pets is diminished by one. When some fosters are caring animals in need for months or even longer, it?s natural that strong bonds develop that can lead to foster failure.

When to think about becoming a pet foster

There are many wonderful reasons to become a foster parent to a shelter dog or cat in need:

  • Privilege of offering a needy animal a safe, comforting and supportive environment while it waits to be adopted, or reunited with family following an emergency, natural disaster or military deployment
  • Help socialize a shelter pet to enhance its adoption potential
  • Reduce the animal?s stress, which improves its adoptability
  • Enjoy the benefits of pet ownership if you?re unable to keep a full-time pet due to lifestyle or other restrictions

While fosters often get attached to their charges, most ?give up? the pet to adoption because they recognize it?s in the best long-term interests of the animal to have a permanent home.?

Pet fostering resources

If you?re a good fit to foster, contact your local shelter,?SPCA, humane society and local rescue groups to learn about specific opportunities in your community. You can search the Petfinder database for animal welfare organizations in your area, and join their Foster a Lonely Pet during the holidays campaign if your local shelter participates.?shelter cat

If you would like to foster a pet for a deployed service member, please contact the following organizations, the first two of which are Pets for Patriots partners:

  • Guardian Angels for Soldier?s Pet?is an all volunteer 501(c)(3) tax exempt military support organization assisting active duty deploying military service members, wounded warriors and honorably discharged/disabled veterans with medical/homeless hardship situations via various programs/services on a national basis, so they can be reunited with their beloved pets following such deployments and/or hardships.
  • Dogs on Deployment is an online resource founded by an active duty husband and wife team. Foster parents and service members, respectively, post through the site and the organization facilitates fosters for deployment, family illness or any other circumstance that renders a service member temporarily unable to care for a pet.
  • NetPets is a national military pet foster program that offers foster arrangements for a wide range of service members? pets including dogs, cats, birds and horses.
  • Operation Noble Foster provides temporary foster homes for military and paramilitary cat owners.

Pet fostering is a great way to give an extra chance to an animal in need and enhance your own life with the companionship of a loving pet.

Extra Girly Genes Boost Male Sex Drive

Women may not be known as the gender with the highest sex drive, but it turns out, at least in mice, males with an extra "girly" sex chromosome seemed to have an insatiable appetite for sex.

In mammals, gender is determined by "sex chromosomes," the X and Y. If you have two X chromosomes, you are a female. If you have one X and one Y, you are a male. (Chromosomes are long strings of DNA that hold many genes; humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, one set inherited from each parent.)

The study was done in mice, not humans, but the genes that determine sex are similar in mammals, so the results might be applicable, especially in males with Klinefelter's syndrome, who are genetically XXY.

"Whether this is a specific phenomenon to mice, or even to this particular inbred background strain of laboratory mice, is still an open question, but we did find similar results in two different genetic models of mice," study researcher Paul Bonthuis, a graduate student at the University of Virginia, told LiveScience in an email. "To know how general the finding is to other mammals one would have to do studies with other mammalian species directly."

Special mice

The researchers studied two special lines of mice.

In the first, they were able to separate the effects of the X and Y chromosomes from the mouse's sexual development (which is dependent on one gene on the Y chromosome). This means that even lab mice with odd numbers of sex chromosomes ? for instance males with two X's or females that have a Y ? still developed normally; they had normal genitalia and sexual behaviors for their gender.

In another genetically engineered mouse model the researchers linked the X and Y chromosome so this pair could be matched up with an X chromosome, resulting in genetically XXY males.

These two models provided different parts of the puzzle, with the first one revealing developmental differences created by genes on either the X or Y chromosome that aren't involved in normal development. The second model would reveal how an extra X chromosome affected the male mice.

Sex hormone levels were normal in all of these special lines of mice.

The X factor

When they studied these mice, they found that the males with two X chromosomes (the XXY males) were about twice as fast to ejaculate and ejaculated nearly twice as often than those with only one. They also mounted females more often and during sex showed more pelvic-thrusting motions.

"We take these findings to mean that not all sex differences in behavior are due to the differences in the hormone secretions by the ovaries and the testes," Bonthuis said. "Our studies indicate that direct genetic differences between XX and XY individuals ? also play a role in causing sex differences in behavior."

These results indicate that there may be an undiscovered gene on the X chromosome that affects sexual behaviors in mice and perhaps in other mammals, the researchers say.

"We do not yet know what gene on the X chromosome is causing this effect on behavior," Bonthuis said, but only a small percent of genes are expressed on both X chromosomes (some genes are automatically turned off in one X when two X chromosomes are present). "It is hard to say for certain what the X factor could be, but we do have some likely candidates."

Human males with two X chromosomes do exist. They have Klinefelter's syndrome, which happens about once every 500 to 1,000 male births. Symptoms include infertility and decreased testosterone levels, among others. Many males don?t show symptoms.

A 1997 report on men with lowered fertility indicated that men with Klinefelter's reported having sexual intercourse more often than normal XY males. If this holds true, they could be under the influence of the same mysterious X chromosome factor as the mice.

The study was published online Feb 10 in the journal Hormones and Behavior.

pantry closet doors and frame fit! hooray. - Family Woodworking

this is the first and easiest part of redoing the kitchen and surrounding area of my sons home.
Not thrilled with the blotchiness, but I learned a bit.
Originally I made the doors to inset, but it just looked bad, so I built a frame and sized it so I can use 5/8th overlay hinges.
before and after pics.

sorry about the pics, its a cellphone camera.

this is a pantry closet that had plywood doors, at the head of the basement stairs, off to the side of the kitchen. Its built into the wall between this room and garage.

used one piece salice overlay hinges, good quality hinge and used liquid nails to secure along with pinnails.
eventually, up the road a bit, Ill build him a cherry basement door to match the cabinets.

he still has to do some wall repair and install moldings.

Coburn on Obama energy policy: ?Keep all the green incentives, but let?s take care of our own oil? [VIDEO]

Oklahoma Republican Sen. Tom Coburn told The Daily Caller that President Obama?s energy policy should??keep all the green incentives, but let?s take care of our own oil.?

The two-term senator said that even if the president and other advocates of ?green energy? are right about their climate-change-related fears, Americans should still be drilling for oil during the more than two decades it will take to bring alternative energies up to scale.

?Let?s say the climate scare people are totally right: It?s still going to take us 25 years to get there,? Coburn insisted. ?So why keep sending $200 billion out of this country [every year] as we get there? Keep all the green incentives, but let?s take care of our own oil.?

Coburn slammed Obama for ?an energy policy that says we?re going to continue to send two or three hundred billion dollars out of this country? annually, ?when in fact we could be paying Americans to develop that energy.?

As long as fossil fuels are developed and traded, he said, Americans should rely as much as possible on domestic sources.

?You know, it doesn?t matter ? the carbon dioxide coming from Iranian oil or Saudi oil is exactly the same as carbon dioxide coming from our oil,? Coburn said.

?So why leave ours in the ground and buy theirs??

The rest of Sen. Coburn?s interview with TheDC?s?Ginni Thomas?will be online Monday morning, only at The Daily Caller. Yesterday TheDC published a video excerpt from the same interview in which Coburn said that??Harry Reid has done more to damage the Senate, I would say, than anybody ? all the rest of them combined ? in my lifetime.?

?The next election is more important to them than the country,? he said of Senate Democrats, ?more important to them than the institution of the Senate. More important that they win, rather than protect and heal our country.?

Deprived of sex, jilted flies drink more alcohol

ScienceDaily (Mar. 15, 2012) ? Sexually deprived male fruit flies exhibit a pattern of behavior that seems ripped from the pages of a sad-sack Raymond Carver story: when female fruit flies reject their sexual advances, the males are driven to excessive alcohol consumption, drinking far more than comparable, sexually satisfied male flies.

Now a group of scientists at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) has discovered that a tiny molecule in the fly's brain called neuropeptide F governs this behavior -- as the levels of the molecule change in their brains, the flies' behavior changes as well.

The new work may help shed light on the brain mechanisms that make social interaction rewarding for animals and those that underlie human addiction. A similar human molecule, called neuropeptide Y, may likewise connect social triggers to behaviors like excessive drinking and drug abuse. Adjusting the levels of neuropeptide Y in people may alter their addictive behavior -- which is exactly what the UCSF team observed in the fruit flies.

"If neuropeptide Y turns out to be the transducer between the state of the psyche and the drive to abuse alcohol and drugs, one could develop therapies to inhibit neuropeptide Y receptors," said Ulrike Heberlein, PhD, a Professor of Anatomy and Neurology at UCSF, who led the research.

Clinical trials are underway, she added, to test whether delivery of neuropeptide Y can alleviate anxiety and other mood disorders as well as obesity.

A Reward Switch in the Brain

The experiments, described this week in the journal Science, started with male fruit flies placed in a container with either virgin female flies or female flies that had already mated. While virgin females readily mate and are receptive toward courting males, once they have mated, females flies lose their interest in sex for a time because of the influence of a substance known as sex peptide, which males inject along with sperm at the culmination of the encounter. This causes them to reject the advances of the male flies.

The rejected males then gave up trying to mate altogether. Even when placed in the same cage as virgin flies, they were not as keen to have sex. Their drinking behavior also changed.

When placed by themselves in a new container and presented with two straws, one containing plain food and the other containing food supplemented with 15 percent alcohol, the sexually rejected flies binged on the alcohol, drinking far more than their sexually satisfied cousins whose advances were never spurned. The difference was not only apparent in their behavior. It was completely predicted by the levels of neuropeptide F in their brains.

"It's a switch that represents the level of reward in the brain and translates it into reward-seeking behavior," said Galit Shohat-Ophir, PhD, the first author of the new study.

A former postdoctoral researcher at UCSF, Shohat-Ophir is now a research specialist at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Janelia Farm Research Center in Ashburn, VA. Later this year, Heberlein will also move to Janelia Farm, where she will become scientific program director.

Experiments Began as a "Crazy" Idea

When the work first started a few years ago, Shohat-Ophir said, it was just a crazy idea. The UCSF team suspected there might be a molecular mechanism in the brain linking social experiences like sexual rejection to psychological states such as depression of the brain system that responds to rewards. So they decided to test whether flies that were rejected sexually would be more prone to drinking.

Flies in the laboratory will normally drink to intoxication if given the choice, but this behavior is altered when neuropeptide F levels are altered in their brains because of their sexual experiences. Mated flies are less likely to seek out such rewarding experiences.

The male flies that were paired with receptive virgin females from the start and successfully mated had lots of neuropeptide F in their brains and drank very little alcohol.

Rejected flies, on the other hand, had lower levels of neuropeptide F in their brains, and sought alternative rewards by drinking to intoxication.

In their work, Heberlein, Shohat-Ophir, and their colleagues showed that they could induce the same behaviors by genetically manipulating the neuropeptide F levels in the flies' brains. Activating the production of neuropeptide F in the brains of virgin males flies made them act as if they were sexually satisfied, and they voluntarily curtailed their drinking.

Lowering the levels of the neuropeptide F receptor made flies that were completely sexually satisfied act as if they were rejected, inciting them to drink more.

The finding has great relevance to addressing human addiction, though it may take years to translate this discovery into any new therapies for addicts, given the much greater complexities of the human mind.

The human version of neuropeptide F, called neuropeptide Y, may work similarly, connecting socially rewarding experiences to behaviors like binge drinking. Already, scientists know that levels of neuropeptide Y are reduced in people who suffer from depression and post-traumatic stress disorder -- conditions that are also known to predispose people toward excessive alcohol and drug abuse.

Manipulating neuropeptide Y may not be so straightforward, however, since the molecule is distributed all over the human brain -- and based on rodent studies, it has roles in feeding, anxiety and sleep, in addition to alcohol consumption.

This work was funded by a Sandler Research Fellowship, the Program for Breakthrough Biomedical Research at the University of California, San Francisco and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, one of the National Institutes of Health.

Evaluating A Senior Day Care Center and Nursing Homes To Assist ...

Finding appropriate seniors care can result in arguments and miscommunication among families. In order to avoid having this problem in your own home, it is time to pay attention to what a nursing home and day care for senior citizens are offering.

What is a nursing home? Will it be exactly like a retirement home?

This is a location for the elderly who need monitored medical treatment everyday. The similarity between retirement homes and nursing homes is both houses elderly people. This is, however, where the parallels conclude. A retirement home can be for older people who do not require medical monitoring. The truth is, a few retirement homes might have active people who prefer physical exercises such as golf, tennis and so forth.

A nursing home is comparable to a hospital minus perhaps the surgical area. Healthcare apparatus and check-up rooms are in place so patients may have the very best health possible. Such houses have at least one doctor and a trustworthy nursing workers to aid and take care of patients. These facilities also provide cleaning personnel to make sure everything stays tidy.

Is this similar to a hospice inn?

No, it?s not. Hospice centers are organizations for the severely ailing with zero or very little chances of recovery. Nursing facilities, on the other hand, are for individuals who may have medical conditions but are not near demise. When an individual signs up for this arrangement, the home?s personnel need to give good care so people can remain fairly healthy.

What exactly are these services like?

It really is dependent upon the facility. In the past, many homes projected a hospital-like look. These homes were largely within structures demonstrating white or other neutral colors. Routines inside were sometimes limited and patients had to observe rigid principles.

Nowadays, numerous homes give you a truly home-like ambience. These places have clean and roomy function rooms where patients can communicate. The design and design of other common areas, including the dining room and entertainment halls, are now contemporary. These rooms further help individuals adjust to their new home life and associate with others.

Exactly what are senior day care centers?

Senior day care centers are facilities that hold the same working hours like most workplaces. The key goal of these centers is to supply effective elderly assistance within those hours. Clients for such centers usually consist of people who need people to care for their elderly throughout the day while they are at work.

A lot like other centers, these centers likewise have experienced personnel to take care of older people. Clients leave them at the location before going to the office, and pick them up after eight hours or so. Several facilities offer services for travel and healthcare checking. This means, they might pick up an elderly, provide care in their area, and send them back home at the end of eight hours or so.

Exciting things to do are provided in these locations to help keep the individuals occupied. Some also provide physical, occupational and speech therapy. They might also arrange events and outings.

What type must families pick?

Before determining whether senior day care centers or nursing homes is going to be best, examine your parents? condition first. Their health can be the prime indicator which establishment to choose. Assess your insurance plan too to understand whether you can afford any extra costs.

The art of chocolate: CR Opera Theatre concocts evening of ...

(Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre illustration)

By Diana Nollen/ SourceMedia Group

Sensual, silly and somber. All ways to describe chocolate confections, all ways to describe the Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre?s upcoming extravaganza, ?The Art of Chocolate.?

Julia Child will bake a cake, Lynne Rossetto Kasper from public radio?s ?The Splendid Table? will speak and a trio of Young Artists will sing of lost love March 31, 2012, in various venues at The Hotel at Kirkwood Center.

?I think it?s a great idea,? says Cedar Rapids native Karen Brunssen, 58, who now lives in the Chicago area and teaches voice and opera at Northwestern University. She will be channeling Child in the one-act comic opera, ?Bon Appetit,? a role she?s performed with about 10 assorted opera companies.

?I love that it?s at the Kirkwood hotel facility and I?m going to be in a cooking studio. That?s probably the best place I?ll ever get to do this show,? she says. ?The combination of the two shows ? I think that?s just so clever.?

Rossetto Kasper also sings the praises of the lineup, in which half the audience will see Brunssen in ?Bon Appetit? in a teaching kitchen while the other half sees the polar opposite opera, ?Face on the Bar Room Floor,? in the lobby. The audience will then gather in a lecture room for a discussion and Q&A with Rossetto Kasper, then divide to see the other opera. Afterward, all will gather again for a champagne and chocolate reception featuring a book signing by ?The Splendid Table? host. Books will be available for purchase that night.

The event is a bit of a departure for Rossetto Kasper, who will be on the road about 30 or 40 dates this year to promote her new book, ?The Splendid Table?s How to Eat Weekends.? (see related story)

?I have been involved in plays,? she says by phone from her home in St. Paul, Minn. ?We have a wonderful group here of 100 men ? The Twin Cities Gay Men?s Chorus. I performed with them when they did a food-themed program. It was utterly hysterical.

?This is my first time being the entr?acte with an opera company. ?I?m trying to decide, should I do one of my diva costumes or just quietly come out on stage,? says the kitchen queen, who describes her age as ?between 58 and death.? ?I?m so looking forward to this. It sounds like it?s going to be fun.?

?This is an unparalleled new experience for us,? says Daniel Kleinknecht, 51, of Coralville, the opera company?s founder and conductor. ?I always like to do things that sort of blur the lines, a bit of this, a bit of that. The idea of ?what is art,? ?what is chamber music? is always interesting to me.

?We?ve put together an evening that?s just sort of pleasure ? two one-act operas dealing with food and drink. The connection is that Lynne will talk about chocolate, then we?ll eat a little chocolate. So food and drink and music ? it?s all there.

?It will be unexpected for the audience, because it?s not a traditional concert in any way.?

At $75, the ticket price is higher than usual and the audience capacity will be smaller, at 300, for the production which will cost between $20,000 and $25,000 to present. Both operas will be accompanied by piano.

The music, however, is of the high caliber Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre audiences have come to expect.

?They are fairly demanding,? Kleinknecht says. ?Both are 20th century pieces. They have some rhythmic challenges, but the music is very gentle to the ear. The stories are engaging, the plots are wonderful and they?re very contrasting. One is very funny, the other more serious. Audiences are going to be very close to the performers, so they?re going to be very engaged with everything. There are no boundaries between the audience and the singers. They will all be very close to one another.?

They may even have to dodge some flying flour as mezzo-soprano Brunssen simultaneously sings and cooks.

?I?ll be making a chocolate cake,? she says, ?and it?s not meticulous at all. It will be quite messy by the time I?m done.

?If anybody knows my personal cooking skills, that?s all the more fun, because they?re limited,? she says. ?I have to crack eggs and I have to separate the yolks from the whites while I?m singing. In one show, I was almost thrown off when I cracked an egg and it had a double yolk. Your mind is going, I?m trying to crack and separate and sing. I got through the moment, but not without a bit of a heart flutter. There are all sorts of opportunities for things to be messed up.

?It?s a 20-minute workout,? says Brunssen, who became intrigued with performing during her Jefferson High School days. ?You are singing pretty hard, and the multi-tasking ? I will always make mistakes and I will always have to recover from them, and that?s fun.?

Describing herself as a tall, big-boned woman like Child, Brunssen recalls seeing Child?s cooking shows on TV when she was a little girl.

?I was too young to be a fan, but I appreciated it,? says Brunssen, daughter of Dean and Ann Gesme of Cedar Rapids.

That appreciation carries over to her portrayal.

?We all kind of laughed at Julia, but with a keen respect for the dignity she brings to the art of cooking,? Brunssen says. ?She was the first of the whole ?cooking-on-TV? thing. There was something we enjoyed about watching her that was light-hearted. She did make messes. She was self-deprecating in a lovely sense.

?You want to find a balance between the awe we have for her but the vulnerability of cooking. She loved that.?

'Lorax' trumps 'John Carter' with $39.1M weekend

(AP) ? "Dr. Seuss' the Lorax" has easily beaten Edgar Rice Burroughs' "John Carter" at the weekend box office.

Studio estimates Sunday put Universal Pictures' "The Lorax" at No. 1 for the second-straight weekend as the animated adventure based on the children's book took in $39.1 million. That raised its 10-day domestic total to $122 million, making "The Lorax" the top-grossing movie released this year.

"John Carter," based on "Tarzan" creator Burroughs' tales of the interplanetary adventurer, opened in second-place with $30.6 million. That's an awful start given the whopping $250 million that Disney reportedly spent to make "John Carter," which also earned generally poor reviews that will hurt its long-term prospects.

The movie's salvation could come overseas, where "John Carter" opened in 55 markets with $70.6 million, giving it a worldwide total of $101.2 million.

The stronger international business helps, but that worldwide total still pales compared to global debuts of $200 million and up for many modern blockbusters.

"We would have hoped for more considering the larger economics of the film but are still encouraged with how it's been received by audiences that have seen it and hope to see that generate positive word of mouth for the balance of the run," said Dave Hollis, Disney's head of distribution.

The Warner Bros. teen comedy "Project X" held up well in its second weekend with $11.6 million to finish at No. 3 and raise its domestic haul to $40.1 million.

Elizabeth Olsen's horror tale "Silent House," released by Open Road Films, opened modestly at No. 4 with $7 million. Olsen plays a young woman terrorized inside her family's spooky summer home.

Eddie Murphy's comedy "A Thousand Words," a leftover shot in 2008 and finally dumped into theaters by distributor Paramount, was a dud at No. 6 with just $6.4 million.

The movie features Murphy as a fast-talking literary agent and neglectful family man who gets a lesson on the important things in life after discovering he has only a thousand words left to utter before he dies.

"A Thousand Words" was so bad it had a perfect score on the film critic site Rottentomatoes.com: all of the 37 reviews compiled there for the movie were negative.

"John Carter" at least managed 49 percent favorable notices of the 170 reviews compiled there. That's still not a recipe for staying power at the box office, particularly with such a bad opening in the United States.

"If you just take the domestic number, it's not a very pretty picture," said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "But if you look at the worldwide opening weekend of a hundred million dollars, that's pretty solid."

"John Carter" casts Taylor Kitsch, co-star of the high school football TV series "Friday Night Lights," in the title role as a 19th century Civil War veteran whisked away to Mars, where he falls for a beautiful princess and becomes a hero in the red planet's own civil war.

Disney executives noted that the movie had a 25 percent uptick in domestic business from opening day Friday to Saturday, saying it was a sign that audiences were talking up "John Carter" to friends.

But the movie drew only 41 percent of its viewers from the under-25 crowd, indicating that Hollywood's key audience of young action fans was not interested.

Overall domestic business rose again as studios continued their 2012 box-office roll. Revenues totaled $140.5 million, up 8.7 percent from the same weekend last year, according to Hollywood.com.

Receipts have climbed every weekend this year, with domestic revenues inching above $2 billion so far in 2012, an 18 percent increase over last year's.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Dr. Seuss' the Lorax," $39.1 million ($1.4 million international).

2. "John Carter," $30.6 million ($70.6 million international).

3. "Project X," $11.6 million ($3 million international).

5. "Act of Valor," $7 million.

6. "A Thousand Words," $6.4 million.
