NW Natural seeks rate reduction in Oregon and Washington

Northwest Natural Gas Co. on Friday said it has filed paperwork with Oregon and Washington regulators asking to reduce rates by between 8 and 9 percent thanks to an increase in U.S. gas supplies.

The Portland-based gas utility (NYSE:NWN) said its request to the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission would drop rates for residential customers by 9 percent, and commercial customers by 9.5 percent. The bill for a residential customer using an average of 55 therms per month would fall by $5.62, while the bill for a commercial customer using 233 therms per month would drop by $23.92.

In Oregon, the company's rates would drop by 8 percent for residential customers and 9 percent for commercial customers, but determining the exact impact on monthly bills is a little more complicated.

Back in December, NW Natural filed a general rate case with the Oregon Public Utilities Commission ? its first in almost a decade ? in which it asked to increase revenue by 6 percent to cover operating costs such as pipeline maintenance and service calls.

Yet the utility expects those increases will be offset by the continued decline in natural gas prices, leading to flat or lower rates. Though exact figures are difficult to know until the rate case is complete, spokeswoman Kim Heiting said it's likely that the average residential bill will fall by around $5 per month while commercial customer bills will drop by around $20.

CEO Gregg Kantor said the rate drop request is in addition to the $35 million in Oregon and $4 million in Washington that it passed back to customers in their June bills.

"Part of the reason for the lower prices is the surge of new domestic gas supplies," Kantor said in a news release. "Last winter was also much warmer than usual, which helped reduce demand and keep prices lower."

Rights group sees police beat W.Sahara protester

Human rights observers visiting Moroccan-held Western Sahara witnessed a woman protester being beaten by police and hospitalised, a member of the group said on Wednesday.

"We saw the woman being beaten. And then we went to hospital, where we found her badly injured," Santiago Canton, director of the Robert F. Kennedy Partners for Human Rights, told AFP by phone from a Sahrawi refugee camp in western Algeria.

"The police were very aggressive. We were told by people there that the situation has been like that for some time," he said.

The incident took place earlier this week in Laayoune, the main city under Moroccan control, during a visit to the disputed territory by the delegation, which is led by Kerry Kennedy, president of the RFK Centre for Justice and Human Rights.

In a statement published by the Washington-based group on Tuesday, the day the delegation left for Algeria, Kennedy described how a policeman lunged at her 17-year-old daughter's camera as she took photos of the incident.

Canton emphasised that the purpose of the trip was to assess the human rights situation on the ground.

He said that while the Moroccan authorities cooperated with the observers, "unfortunately they had a group of people following us everywhere we went."

The visit comes amid a row between the United Nations and Rabat, which has demanded the replacement of new UN peace envoy Christopher Ross, whom it accuses of "bias" in efforts to resolve the status of the territory.

Morocco annexed the Western Sahara in 1975 in a move never recognised by the international community.

The rebel Polisario Front, which has been campaigning for the territory's independence since before its annexation, controls a small part the desert interior and has bases in Tindouf, across the Algerian border, where some 40,000 refugees live in extreme conditions.

The rights observers travelled to Tindouf on Wednesday, where they met rights activists and families of the victims of Africa's longest-running conflict.

They were due to meet representatives of UN agencies and NGOs working there before holding talks with Polisario leaders.

"It is moving to see women who have such terrible stories of human rights violations committed against them or their relatives not admit to being defeated or broken," Kennedy was quoted as saying by the official Algerian news agency APS.

Some Moroccan MPs have strongly criticised the group's visit.

Morocco's Foreign Minister Saad Eddine El Otmani, cited by the official MAP news agency on Wednesday, said he hoped the visit to Western Sahara and Tindouf would allow the group "to realise the gross abuses suffered by the populations in the camps."

The delegation will publish a report at the end of the trip, which is due to wind up on Thursday.

HomeFries | Planning a Family Get-Together

It?s almost Labor Day weekend.? I?m having 15 people spend two nights at my house. What are you up to?

The key to me not freaking out about this is to stay organized. Frankly, I love entertaining because I love the planning aspect of it. Any excuse to make a TO-DO list is just fine with me.

So this is how I?m staying organized. I have several lists going on right now.

First list to kick it off is the WHO THE HECK WILL BE THERE, list?

I kinda map out what meals we?re going to be having. This is my first list.

Then I map out the days on other piece of paper and put down the different meals we?ll be having.

Later on I fill in the blanks after I?ve done some brainstorming.

When I?m brainstorming the food, I print out recipes and figure out what needs to be bought at the store.

Since we are having a huge family get together, I gotta make a Costco list but there are some things at regular stores I need too!

There?s much more to add, this is just a start.

I like to write down the food I?m making on my list. It helps me not forget what I have to do!

And then I like to break it down to what I need to do on each day in the kitchen/shopping wise:

Lastly, there?s stuff TO DO AROUND THE HOUSE.

I make a huge list & then the husband and I divide & conquer.

Now a mass email goes out to all my sister-in-laws about food & sleeping arrangements and hopefully they?ll email me back and fill in the blanks. In a perfect world, they would all respond back to the email, but in reality I get a few emails, text messages, and messages through husbands of what is going on. And we all know how accurate a husband?s message is. Ha!

Wish me luck!

Michael Douglas Heads for Reykjavik

While Michael Douglas stole our hearts as President Andrew Shepard in "The American President," it looks like the actor is now going back to The White House.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Doulas is in talks to play President Ronald Reagan in the upcoming indie film, "Reykjavik." Set over the course of a few days in 1986, the film centers on the peace talks between Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev during the wake of the Chernobyl disaster. (Alternate title: "When Reagan met Gorbachev.")

Ridley Scott is set to produce the film with Mike Newell ("Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire"), who is in talks to direct. The role of Gorbachev has yet to be cast.

"Reykjavik" will be financed by Participant Media, who backed the award-winning environmental documentary "An Inconvenient Truth."

This film isn't the only upcoming project that features an actor portraying Reagan. In "The Butler," Alan Rickman will play the late president (Jane Fonda is set to play his wife, Nancy).

UK's Cameron challenged to act on Heathrow Airport

FILE- Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron makes a speech ahead of the lighting of the Paralympic flame cauldron in Trafalgar Square, London, in this file photo dated Friday, Aug. 24, 2012. The long-serving member of Parliament and chairman of the Energy and Climate Change Committee, Tim Yeo, has commented publicly on Cameron's opposition to expanding London's Heathrow Airport, "The prime minister must ask himself whether he is man or mouse," Yeo wrote in The Daily Telegraph newspaper published on Tuesday Aug. 28, 2012. 28, 2012. (AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth, file)

(AP) ? Prime Minister David Cameron is facing heat from his own Conservative party over the subject of building a third runway for London's beleaguered Heathrow Airport.

"The prime minister must ask himself whether he is man or mouse," lawmaker Tim Yeo wrote in The Daily Telegraph, a Conservative-supporting newspaper that splashed the question in a front-page headline.

Tuesday's blast was the rudest shot yet in a campaign by airlines, business groups and unions demanding that Cameron ditch his opposition to a third runway at Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport, which serves 70 million passengers a year.

Business groups back the third runway as job-creating economic boost for the flat-lining British economy. There are also worries that Heathrow is losing ground against competitors such as Frankfurt airport and Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.

Opposition to the third runway was Cameron's initiative four years ago as he worked to make his party appear more sensitive to environmental issues. Justine Greening, Cameron's transport secretary, supports her constituents in west London in opposing another runway.

Greening's department is setting long-term goals for preserving London's status as an aviation hub. But conclusions won't be published until March and only then would the department look at specific moves to increase capacity.

The recent pressure on Cameron is partly in anticipation of a shuffle of Cabinet positions. Dismissing Greening, say some Conservatives, would be a strong signal that the third runway project is back on.

"Does he want to be another Harold Macmillan (prime minister 1957-1963), presiding over a dignified slide towards insignificance? Or is there somewhere in his heart ... a trace of (Margaret) Thatcher, determined to reverse the direction of our ship?" Yeo wrote in his op-ed piece.

Cameron's office said the prime minister would keep his promise to oppose another runway during his coalition government with the Liberal Democrats, which is due to end in 2015.

"We don't see the argument for a third runway," a spokeswoman for Cameron said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Still, the Institute of Directors, representing 38,000 directors of U.K. businesses, weighed in to support Yeo.

"There is no doubt that we need more airport capacity, and the longer the government delays deciding where it will be, the more chances for trade we will miss," said Simon Walker, the Institute's director general.

British Airways, the biggest tenant at Heathrow, has been equally forceful in pressing Cameron to change direction.

"I don't believe this government has the political will to address the issues," Willie Walsh, chief executive of International Airlines Group, BA's owner, said last month.

"David Cameron seems a lot happier clapping and cheering for (Olympic) gold medals than dealing with tough, long-term economic challenges," Walsh told the Financial Times.

London Mayor Boris Johnson, a potential rival to Cameron, wants to build an entirely new airport ? dubbed "Boris Island" ? east of London near the mouth of the River Thames.

"Heathrow is fundamentally not the place" for expansion, he has said.

Heathrow, the hub of long-haul flights, is operating at capacity, with 1,300 landings and takeoffs every day. Whatever happens, airlines could not expect any additional capacity at Heathrow or any other London airport before 2020.

Gordon Brown's Labour government approved a third runway for Heathrow in 2009, in the face of loud opposition from locals.

Cameron canceled the project when he formed a coalition government following the 2010 election. Labour's new leader, Ed Miliband, has reversed his party's support for a third runway as well.

A study published by the British Chambers of Commerce earlier this year claimed that a third runway would add 30 billion pounds ($48 billion) a year to the U.K. economy, and that every year of delay cost the nation about 1 billion pounds ($1.6 billion).

Police chief in Afghan south survives insurgent truck bomb

KANDAHAR (Reuters) - The chief of police in Afghanistan's Kandahar province has survived an insurgent truck-bomb attack which killed four civilians, a spokeswoman for NATO-led forces and Afghan officials said on Tuesday.

The attack in the southern city of Kandahar, the spiritual heartland of the Taliban, came barely a day after insurgents beheaded 17 party-goers in neighboring Helmand province, highlighting security problems in the region ahead of a 2014 withdrawal of most NATO combat troops.

"The Kandahar police chief was injured by a large explosion believed to be a vehicle-borne IED. He was taken to an ISAF facility for his injuries," the spokeswoman for the 120,000-strong International Security Assistance Force told Reuters.

General Abdul Raziq had been in a convoy late on Monday when the bomb, or improvised explosive device (IED), exploded, killing four civilians and wounding 24, Kandahar provincial government spokesman Jawed Faisal said.

Raziq was slightly wounded on his hand and face, Faisal said, and was taken to hospital briefly.

An insurgent suicide bomber wearing a police uniform killed Raziq's predecessor, Khan Mohammad Mojayed, in April 2011, slipping past guards to enter a heavily guarded police compound in the city.

Helpful Hints For Losing Those Extra Pounds | Health and fitness ...

It can be very vital to lose weight and finding the right plan for you can be difficult. There are lots of diets that can actually cause you harm. The information included in this article can help you lose weight the right way.

When trying to lose weight, it is very important to keep track of what you are eating. When dieters track their food intake, surveys have shown them to be more successful with their weight loss. This fact holds true that people who keep track are losing twice as much weight as people who don?t.

When on a diet, try to lose one pound every week. Trying to lose more than that is just too much. Losing weight quickly is not only unhealthy, you will probably end up putting the pounds straight back on.

You probably know the importance of exercise in losing weight. Plan at least three sessions a week, and target a 40 to 60 minute window. Put exercise into your schedule, whether it be after work or in the morning, so you burn stress as well as fat. Stay as consistent as possible with your exercising and food consumption during your program.

Don?t make the mistake of skipping breakfast when you?re attempting to lose weight. At first, it might seem like neglecting breakfast would mean fewer calories and therefore, more weight loss. If you skip breakfast it will make you hungry throughout the day and you will eat more.

Obese adults often started out as obese children. No responsible parent wants that kind of future for their child. In order to ensure healthy eating habits as adults, you must ingrain those habits in them as children. Get your children interested by teaching them to read nutrition labels on foods. You can also let them help to plan the family meals. When your children grow up, they will thank you.

The rate at which you lose weight depends on how heavy you are to begin with. One or two pounds per week is considered a healthy weight loss, on average. If you?re obese, you might need to double that, at least in the beginning.

Instead of regular butter, eat whipped butter. Butter is an item that many people don?t want to eliminate or replace. Many people love the taste of actual butter. Luckily, you can still eat butter and lose weight. Use whipped butter instead. It contains fifty percent less calories.

Find someone you can exercise with. This way, exercising will feel more like socializing sessions rather than drudgery to lose weight. You and your buddy can give each other encouragement and share stories of successes and failures. You can have such a good time that you look forward to your exercise periods; that will help you lose weight.

Weight loss, as you now know, is a very important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This will let you develop a plan that is right for your situation. Considering all of the tips above is a great place to start.

Demonstrating the Business-Wise Nature of a Ten-Point Presentation

Greg Fisher?s slide show on the 10 Basic Principles has received mention in the web site PowerHomeBiz.com. Each of those principles applies to the fundamentals of establishing and growing a business of any size. Nine of the ten have been?practised?by a successful home-based business in Los Angeles County.

The owner of that business earns a livelihood by renting and repairing computers. He realized at the start that he had to follow the first of Fisher?s ten principles. That first principle calls on the business-owner to decide what he or she will do and will not do. The young man who established this new home-based business had been working in a shop where some customers came in with broken computers. Others wanted a passport picture taken, or wanted to have their fingerprints made available to the proper authorities.

The young man who has set out on his own knew how to take passport photos and how to take fingerprints, as well as how to repair computers. However, he realized that once he had his own business, he would not be in a position to do all three. Therefore, he chose to concentrate on repairing computers, and having equipment available for rent, should a customer be unable to do without a piece of technology.

Fisher?s next principle focuses in on the area of service; a business owner should decide who he or she is going to serve. That principle proved fairly easy-to-follow for the young fellow in L.A. A number of the businesses that had been utilizing the services of a technician at one location were only too happy to support that same technician, when he chose to strike out on his own. Still, that same young fellow did not ignore Fisher?s suggestion, namely that the business-owner focus well on those men and women that he or she intends to serve.

Those who have sought help from that one technician-turned-business-owner have seen how his business is different. Each of them can re-enforce any doubts that the young man might have about his ability to follow Fisher?s third principle. That asks the business-owner to consider how his/her business is different from others.

In the past, when that former technician arrived at the location of a broken computer, he did not walk in the door with a large tool kit. However, now that he is on his own, he has invested in a bag that can be used to carry all the needed tools into the place where he will be working. He makes it clear that he is ready to carry-out the repairs on-site, if at all possible. That is a convenience that will no doubt be appreciated by many customers.

Those same customers probably lack an understanding of the efforts extended by that same business-owner, while seeking to follow the fourth of Fisher?s ten principles. That one calls for careful management of the business? cash flow. This one young man works on his invoices every night. That way he can be sure that both new and old customers receive an invoice as soon as possible, after receiving requested services. That approach contributes to the careful management of cash flow.

Only the fifth of Fisher?s ten principles has been all-but ignored by this one business-owner. That fifth principle urges the careful management of employees. In this case, the business called Candid Tech Solutions is so small that the owner of that enterprise has not yet hired an employee. Still, he has tried to offer some type of incentive to the banker who has helped him with financing. Fisher encourages the awarding of incentives to employees.

While unable to exemplify the wisdom behind Fisher?s fifth principle, this one entrepreneur does a terrific job of showing the benefits achieved by following the sixth of the ten principles. Number six spells out the need to manage customer expectations. This one business-owner has made a point of limiting promises, and focusing instead on the delivery of results. In fact, one of his customers has urged him to be careful about allowing customers to have expectations that exceed the physical and financial capabilities of a small business owner.

One action taken by that business-owner in Los Angeles has shown his willingness to follow the seventh of Fisher?s ten principles. That is the principle that calls for the setting of goals, and the readiness to pursue them. When putting together a web site, this one young man sought help from a writer. Unfortunately, the computer skills of that writer did not equip her for placing content directly on the new site?s planned homepage, and adjoining pages. Therefore, the site-owner stayed up late one night, composing the content himself.

Because this young man is a real talker, he has done an excellent job of adhering to the eighth of Fisher?s ten principles. That is the one that urges the business-owner to strive for exposure within the marketplace. Through his readiness to talk about his business, this one entrepreneur has gained help from friends and family, who are ready to aid with his achievement of exposure.

For some business people, principle nine and ten might be difficult to achieve in a coordinated fashion. Those principles call for both perseverance and a show of integrity. It is always tempting to take a short cut, to try getting around some required hard work. This one young man knows that his customers count on him to avoid taking that route. For that reason, he goes out of his way to adhere to the final two of Fisher?s ten principles.

Isaac casts shadow over GOP convention, campaign

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Undaunted by Mother Nature, Republicans are set to descend on Florida as Mitt Romney's team works to cram four days of events into three after the threat of Tropical Storm Isaac forced the soon-to-be nominee to cut short his national convention.

Officials say they hope to begin laying out a revised schedule on Sunday.

As aides in Tampa scramble, Romney is taking a rare day off the campaign trail at his lakeside vacation home in New Hampshire, receiving updates on the storm and making final preparations for the Thursday speech with which he will accept his party's presidential nomination.

"The safety of those in Isaac's path is of the utmost importance," Romney tweeted after Republican officials announced they had called off Monday's convention proceedings.

Because of possible storm surges and flooding Isaac could bring, convention organizers said they were making contingency plans to move delegates who have been booked into beachfront hotels to other locations if necessary. They indicated the schedule shift also was meant to prevent overburdening emergency response personnel at the height of the storm.

The GOP made the announcement late Saturday, saying that while the convention would officially be gaveled into session on Monday as scheduled, events would be postponed until Tuesday.

With Isaac boring down on the coast, President Barack Obama, who was spending the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, dispatched the Federal Emergency Management Agency to establish a command center and move more resources into the state. Vice President Joe Biden scrapped a planned campaign trip into Florida that was to counter the start of the GOP convention.

Republicans hope to use this week's convention to cast Romney as a determined leader with the know-how to fix the country's economy. They also want to introduce him as a family oriented figure to counter the image of him as a ruthless businessman as Democrats have sought to brand him.

Romney and his wife, Ann, looked to show off the more personal side with a joint interview airing Sunday.

"I wish everyone could see him how I see him, because as a mother, I've seen him, how compassionate he's been with me, as a wife and my raising these small children and how he always valued my work as being more important than his," Ann Romney said in the "Fox News Sunday" interview taped at the family's summer home in New Hampshire.

The candidate described his wife as his "best friend, obviously, and my counselor throughout my life," according to an advance transcript.

While the Romneys reveled in their convention, Obama was due to travel next week to college towns in Iowa, Colorado and Virginia to court young voters and college students. The president's nomination for a desired second term was to come a week later in Charlotte, N.C., during a Democratic convention beginning Sept. 4, right on the heels of the Republican convention.

In an interview with The Associated Press published Saturday, Obama sought to portray Romney as someone beholden to "extreme positions" on economic and social issues. Obama took pains to paint Romney and his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, as ideologues at a time when voters seem frustrated by government gridlock.

After a near-constant travel schedule since he was announced as the GOP vice presidential candidate, Ryan was also taking a rare break. Following a Saturday evening fundraiser in Manchester, N.H., he returned home to Janesville, Wis. Aides said Ryan planned a quiet Sunday. Then, before flying to Florida, he was to appear at a Monday rally in his hometown that was likely to offer him a hero's sendoff.

A few of Romney's former presidential rivals were holding events of their own in Tampa. Herman Cain and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann ? both have endorsed Romney ? were appearing at a joint event. Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who hasn't conferred his blessing on the presumptive nominee, was anticipating thousands at a University of South Florida rally.

OfficeAutoPilot Email Marketing | Traffic,SEO,Internet Marketing

What?s nice about this system is that it can effectively combine inbound (online) and outbound (offline) marketing campaigns together as one, giving business owners a more holistic look at the success of their marketing and sales efforts.

Although big business would benefit from this software it is probably more suited to the smaller enterprise because of how it is set up.

Office AutoPilot is going to help show you which section of your marketing is working and not working shedding some light on your numbers.

This tool lays it all on the line and makes it easy for anyone working for your business to understand which marketing channels are working, which need improvement, and which you should ditch.

You will also see which need improvement, and which you should ditch. For a price that?s significantly less than you?d pay an online marketing team, you get all of the above plus unlimited landing pages, forms, upsells.

Also If-Then rules and automated sequences, and up to 200 custom fields.

Sometimes it?s hard to know if it?s right for you unless you actually give it a go. Office AutoPilot does give money back guarantee?s for businesses.

Office AutoPilot is by no means the perfect tool. For example, if you?re into affiliate marketing, you may find that this tool falls a little bit short.

The tool currently doesn?t do any pixel tracking (a system that allows affiliates to see what is converting and what?s not) which is a bit disappointing.

The other downside is the tracking for big Ecommerce websites. The company have made a statement that it is working on this through.

Despite its few shortcomings, Office AutoPilot offers a lot more than other similar systems within the same price range.

It?s extremely user friendly, and a business owner no matter how inexperienced he or she may be it can pick up the tool today and begin improving their marketing campaign immediately.

How makers of phones and tablets are faring

Many companies including Nokia and Research in Motion have been struggling to compete with Apple and manufacturers of devices running Google's Android software. That shows in some of the earnings reports released so far for the latest quarter.

Here's a look at how makers of phones and tablet computers are doing:

? July 10: BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. asks disgruntled investors at a shareholders meeting for patience as it develops new devices to rival the iPhone and Android smartphones. The company reiterates a warning that the next several quarters will be challenging. It also expects to report another operating loss in the current quarter, which ends Sept. 1, as the company cuts prices to sell its older BlackBerry models.

? July 19: Nokia Corp. says its net loss nearly quadrupled in the second quarter on sagging sales of smartphones, which fell 39 percent from a year ago to 10.2 million. The company's stock jumped, however, as sales of low-end phones buoyed revenue and shipments of the new Lumia phones, which run on Windows software and will replace the older smartphone models, were not as bad as feared. In North America, sales of the Lumia phones offset declines in traditional Symbian devices.

Google Inc., which completed its purchase of Motorola Mobility during the quarter, says it saw strengths in North America with Verizon Wireless, driven by the Razr Maxx device. But it says international sales of basic cellphones and mid-tier smartphones declined. Google reiterates that 1 million new Android devices from various phone makers are being activated each day, with more than 400 million activated worldwide.

? July 24: Apple Inc. says it sold 26 million iPhones, 28 percent more than a year ago. It also sold 17 million iPads, an 84 percent increase and a quarterly record. But average selling prices for both products were down.

? July 25: LG Electronics reports a lower quarterly profit as its mobile phone division sank to a loss. Basic handset sales declined while expenses to promote its new smartphones went up. The company says profitability at the mobile communication business will not be too bad for the rest of the year with new high-end mobile device launches due in North America and Japan. But it stops short of guiding investors on when the company can fully turn around its mobile business

? July 27: Samsung Electronics Co. reports another record-high quarterly profit as customers flocked to Galaxy smartphones. Samsung benefited as rivals including Apple had yet to release new models. The performance in mobile phones helped offset a slowdown in other consumer electronics businesses such as televisions.

IDC reports that Samsung has extended its lead over Apple in smartphones. Samsung had a market share of 33 percent in the second quarter, up from 17 percent a year ago. Apple's fell slightly to 17 percent, from 19 percent a year ago. The drop is typical several months after the release of a new iPhone model.

? Aug. 2: Sony Corp. says revenue in its mobile division more than doubled, but that's largely because it took full ownership of Sony Mobile, once a joint venture with LM Ericsson. Had the transaction been reflected in the year-ago quarter, growth would have been about 14 percent. Sony says more people have been buying smartphones rather than the cheaper, basic phones. It's also sold more smartphones, mostly because of strong performance of Xperia S and Xperia acro HD.

? Aug. 3: Taiwan smartphone maker HTC Corp. reports a 58 percent drop in profit, its third consecutive quarterly decline as intensifying competition from Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. hurt sales. The company had hoped to win back some of its market with the launch of "HTC One" series, which offers users a better camera and music experience. But following the huge popularity of Samsung's Galaxy handsets, the model's key U.S. carrier, AT&T, recently slashed the prices of "HTC One" by half. HTC says the U.S. will continue to be an important market, but that China "will be a key driving force for our future growth."

? Aug. 8: Research group IDC says the success of Samsung's Android phones helped Google's operating system extend its dominance in the smartphone market. There were four Android phones for every iPhone shipped in the second quarter, up from a ratio of 2.5 to 1 in the same period last year. The gains come largely at the expense of BlackBerry phones made by Research in Motion Ltd. and Symbian phones made largely by Nokia Corp. Apple's market share dropped slightly, but the company shipped more iPhones than a year ago.

? Aug. 13: Google says it's cutting about 4,000 jobs at its Motorola Mobility cellphone business and will close or consolidate about one-third of its 90 locations. The reductions represent about 20 percent of Motorola Mobility's 20,000 employees, and 7 percent of Google's overall work force. Two-third of the job cuts will take place outside of the U.S., Google said. The job eliminations come three months after Google bought the once-dominant U.S. cellphone maker for $12.5 billion, chiefly with a view to using its large patent portfolio to bolster its legal defenses.

? Aug. 15: Rating agency Standard and Poor's downgrades Nokia Corp.'s long-term corporate credit rating further into junk status amid concerns over the cellphone company's deteriorating profitability.

? Aug. 16: Samsung Electronics Co. begins selling the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet in the U.S., the U.K. and South Korea. It has a digital pen and a faster processor than the iPad, but has a lower screen resolution.

Lenovo Group Ltd. says smartphone shipments grew 44 percent for a market share of 11 percent. Lenovo says it sold 5 million smartphones in China in the latest quarter, passing PC sales by number of units for the first time.

? Thursday: Sony's cellphone division says it's cutting 1,000 jobs, or 15 percent of its global workforce, mostly in Sweden over the next two fiscal years through March 2014. Sony Mobile Communications says the job cuts are an effort to reduce costs and boost profits. They are part of Sony Corp.'s already announced plan to reduce 10,000 jobs, or 6 percent of its global workforce, by March 2013.

RIM says it has begun showing its new BlackBerry smartphones to wireless carriers around the world, but the struggling company says it is still months away from starting to sell them.

Coming up:

? Sept. 27: Research In Motion Ltd.

Superfund Solutions: Gowanus Lighthouse Development Will Be ...

Who would want to live on the shores of a Superfund site? Maybe the better question is, who would want to own a place on one?

Toll Brothers killed their plan to build a new housing complex on the Gowanus Canal two years ago when the U.S. Enviornmental Protection Agency decreed the canal was toxic, despite protests and counter-proposals from the Bloomberg administration. That is why the news earlier this month that the Lighthouse Group was going to develop the site was so surprising. But part of the developer?s secret appears to be hundreds more units and renting them rather than selling them.

Curbed got the full details at a community board meeting last night.

The Toll Bros. plan to build 447 market rate condos was seemingly scotched by the designation of the Gowanus canal as a Superfund site. Lightstone?s plan calls for a building virtually the same size, but with 560 market rate apartments and 140 affordable housing apartments. There will be retail space along the Bond Street side of the development and community spaces on the canal and 1st Streets. And instead of turning its back on the canal, the Lightstone plan is treating the infamous waterway as a major amenity and includes a waterfront promenade.

Love the slime, don?t hate it! And if things do grow foul, just don?t renew that lease next year.

MY THOUGHTS

I?ve had some jobs that required heavy duty telephone work. I got a lot of sore throats, some from just talking a lot and some from sickness. I?ve tried lots of cough drops and Chloraseptic is a product that I can say has always helped. Recently I tried Chloraseptic Warming Sore Throat Spray. The nice thing about Chloraseptic spray is that it works within seconds, you don?t have to wait for it to start working like you do with a lozenge. This spray does feel warm, and the taste is similar to that of tea with honey. For those that watch what they eat, you?ll be happy to know that this spray is sugar-free. With school starting back up and cold season coming this would be a good thing to consider putting in the medicine cabinet.

Chloraseptic Warming Sore Throat Spray comes in a 6 fl. oz. bottle and has a suggested retail price of $6.25 per bottle.

A Gel That Extends The Shelf Life of Bananas

60-Second Science

Chemists have created a spray-on gel that can slow the ripening of bananas. Christie Nicholson reports

More 60-Second Science

One day the banana is perfect. Bright yellow, firm, flavorful. But even within the same day brown spots appear on your perfectly ripe banana, its flesh turns mushy, and it?s destined for the compost or at best, banana bread.

?

But scientists are developing a way to extend the life of bananas. It?s a spray-on coating made from chitosan?a substance found in crab and shrimp shells. The new gel can be sprayed on bananas to slow the ripening process by up to 12 days.

?

Like other fruit bananas remain alive after being picked and they actually continue to respire. This means they take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. The more the banana breathes the faster it ripens and then rots. Bananas ripen more quickly than most fruit because they don?t naturally slow the respiration after being picked, in fact it speeds up, giving bananas their notoriously short shelf life.

?

Chitosan not only kills the bacteria on banana?s skin that then leads to rot, it also significantly slows down the respiration in the first place. So bananas won?t drive you bananas.

?

?Christie Nicholson

New cancer scanner halves radiation

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? Particle physicists have developed a new medical technology that combines PET and MRI in one. Benefit: Improved image quality and less radiation.

Current cancer examinations involve high levels of radiation. Based on the Big Bang research in CERN, particle physicists at University in Oslo have created a brand new technology that combines the PET and MR medical imaging technologies. This combination involves much less radiation than current technology.

PET is an abbreviation of Positron emission tomography and it provides a spatial image of where the cancer cells are located in the body. PET scans are harder to interpret if medical staff cannot situate the location of cancer cells in relation to the skeleton and soft tissue. This can be done by comparing PET images with an anatomical picture such as CT (computerised tomography) or MR (magnetic resonance) scans.

CT scans provide a three-dimensional x-ray image of the body. MR scans photograph the body using radio waves and a powerful magnetic field. MR provides far better images of soft tissue than CT does. The drawback of MR scans is that the examination is more expensive and takes much longer. The advantage is that MR does not emit ionising radiation.

Currently, most hospitals combine PET and CT, but this combination has a significant weakness.

'The radiation from such an examination is ten times higher than the average background radiation over the course of a year. Many cancer patients must be examined multiple times to test whether the treatment is working. The total radiation during treatment can therefore be very high', says Erlend Bolle, a researcher in particle physics in the Department of Physics at University of Oslo (UiO), Norway.

Animal scanner for research

Today, there are two types of PET technologies, each adapted to a particular use: One is adapted for clinical examinations of patients. The other technology is optimised to let researchers find new and better cancer treatments by testing new medicines on animals. Siemens and Philips have recently launched a new PET/MR combination for patients. Particle physicists at UiO are the first in the world to develop a specially adapted PET/MR solution for scans of animals.

'The high resolution in our PET scanner provides better images, and the high sensitivity makes it possible to use only half as much radioactivity in the examinations without it affecting the image quality. This opens new possibilities in research, and may also contribute to reducing radiation in clinical scanners, especially within mammography and brain scans. We therefore hope that Philips and Siemens find our technology interesting', says Bolle to the research magazine Apollon.

Together with his three colleagues, he has constructed a PET machine that is so small that it can be placed inside an MR machine. Both images can therefore be taken at the same time, and medical personnel do not have to correct the errors that occur when two images are combined after they have been taken.

Eats up all the photons

In a standard PET examination, radioactive isotopes are attached to sugar molecules and injected into the body. The PET image is taken one hour later, when the sugar has been distributed to the entire body. Cancer cells burn sugar quicker than healthy cells. Radioactive gamma particles therefore accumulate in cancer cells. The gamma particles send out two sets of photons in opposite directions. This is called parallel photons.

In order to trace the radioactive source, the PET scanner must find which parallel photons are linked. This is one of the great challenges for current PET scanners.

As long as the photons hit the detectors at a right angle, all is well. When they are captured, it is possible to calculate which two photons are linked. The problem arises when the photons hit the detector at an angle. This leads to a great risk of imprecise measurements of the collision points. This diminishes the image quality.

Only half of the photons deposit all their energy on first impact. On subsequent impacts, only some of the energy is deposited before the photons change direction and deposit the rest of the energy elsewhere. Current detectors have no depth information and therefore cannot reconstruct the positions of these photons.

'In order to capture all the photons, we measure the position in three dimensions in a five-layer detector', Bolle says.

In current machines, in order to have the photons hit the detectors at as straight an angle as possible, it is important that the entire patient is as centrally positioned in the machine as possible. It is therefore important that there is great distance between the patient and the detector. This solution has a major weakness.

'When there are large openings on both sides of the scanner, too many photons go astray. This diminishes the image quality. The closer the patient is to the detector, the higher the sensitivity of the image.'

In the new UiO PET scanner, good image quality can be achieved even if the test animal is lying right next to the detectors.

'We have managed to double the sensitivity. In practice, we can take the pictures twice as fast, or only use half of the radioactive dose in order to get the same image quality as previously.'

New crystals

The new detectors are made from entirely new crystals and light guides. In each of the five layers of the detectors, crystal pins are placed on top of a transverse layer of light guide fibres.

'This is a completely new way of measuring gamma particles.

The detectors are placed so that the space within the new scanner is square.'

'Today, the scanners form a circle. This means that there is a gap between each detector block, and photons disappear through the gaps. Now, we have full coverage of crystals on all sides. We can capture several million particles a second. However, this does not happen at regular intervals. We measure each nanosecond. If we do not measure fast enough, we can get errors.'

Early digitalising

All the parts of the PET scanner are put together like lego bricks. The system digitalises the data at an earlier stage than the current PET solutions. The data can be sent to any number of computers. The image processing takes place in parallel with the examination.

'Though we are making a scanner for animals, it can easily be rebuilt for hospital use', Bolle notes. He got the idea from the large Big Bang experiment in CERN, in which enormous detectors in the world's largest physics experiment are to trace the world's smallest particles. The research is funded by the Research Council of Norway and the Swiss National Science Foundation.

(AP) ? When Israeli archaeologist Yoram Haimi decided to investigate his family's unknown Holocaust history, he turned to the skill he knew best: He began to dig.

After learning that two of his uncles were murdered in the infamous Sobibor death camp, he embarked on a landmark excavation project that is shining new light on the workings of one of the most notorious Nazi killing machines, including pinpointing the location of the gas chambers where hundreds of thousands were killed.

Sobibor, in eastern Poland, marks perhaps the most vivid example of the "Final Solution," the Nazi plot to wipe out European Jewry. Unlike other camps that had at least a facade of being prison or labor camps, Sobibor and the neighboring camps Belzec and Treblinka were designed specifically for exterminating Jews. Victims were transported there in cattle cars and gassed to death almost immediately.

But researching Sobibor has been difficult. After an October 1943 uprising at the camp, the Nazis shut it down and leveled it to the ground, replanting over it to cover their tracks.

Today, tall trees cover most of the former camp grounds. Because there were so few survivors ? only 64 were known ? there has never been an authentic layout of the camp, where the Nazis are believed to have murdered some 250,000 Jews over an 18-month period. From those few survivors' memories and partial German documentation, researchers had only limited understanding of how the camp operated.

"I feel like I am an investigator in a criminal forensic laboratory," Haimi, 51, said near his home in southern Israel this week, a day before departing for another dig in Poland. "After all, it is a murder scene."

Over five years of excavations, Haimi has been able to remap the camp and has unearthed thousands of items. He hasn't found anything about his family, but amid the teeth, bone shards and ashes through which he has sifted, he has recovered jewelry, keys and coins that have helped identify some of Sobibor's formerly nameless victims.

The heavy concentration of ashes led him to estimate that far more than 250,000 Jews were actually killed at Sobibor.

"Because of the lack of information about Sobibor, every little piece of information is significant," said Haimi. "No one knew where the gas chambers were. The Germans didn't want anyone to find out what was there. But thanks to what we have done, they didn't succeed."

The most touching find thus far, he said, has been an engraved metal identification tag bearing the name of Lea Judith de la Penha, a 6-year-old Jewish girl from Holland who Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial confirmed was murdered at the camp.

Haimi calls her the "symbol of Sobibor."

"The Germans didn't discriminate. They killed little girls too," he said. "This thing (the tag) has been waiting for 70 years for someone to find it."

Haimi's digs, backed by Yad Vashem, could serve as a template for future scholarship into the Holocaust, in which the Nazis and their collaborators killed about 6 million Jews.

"I think the use of archaeology offers the possibility of giving us information that we didn't have before," Deborah Lipstadt, a prominent American Holocaust historian from Emory University, said. "It gives us another perspective when we are at the stage when we have very few people who can speak in the first person singular."

She said that if the archaeological evidence points to a higher death toll at Sobibor than previously thought, "it is not out of sync with other research that has been done."

Haimi's basic method is similar to what he does at home, where he does digs for Israel's antiquites authority in the south of the country ? cutting out squares of land and sifting the earth through a filter. Because of the difficult conditions at Sobibor and the sensitive nature of the effort, he is also relying on more non-invasive, high-tech aids such as ground-penetrating radar and global positioning satellite imaging.

Based on debris collected and patterns in the soil, he has been able to figure out where the Nazis placed poles to hold up the camp's barbed wire fences.

That led him to his major breakthrough ? the mapping of what the Germans called the Himmelfahrsstrasse, or the "Road to Heaven," a path upon which the inmates were marched naked into the gas chambers. He determined its route by the poles that marked the path. From that, he determined where the gas chambers would have been located.

He also discovered that another encampment was not located where originally thought and uncovered an internal train route within Sobibor. He dug up mounds of bullets at killing sites, utensils from where he believes the camp kitchen was located and a swastika insignia of a Nazi officer.

Along the way, he and his Polish partner Wojciech Mazurek, along with some 20 laborers, have stumbled on thousands of personal items belonging to the victims: eye glasses, perfume bottles, dentures, rings, watches, a child's Mickey Mouse pin, a diamond-studded gold chain, a pair of gold earrings inscribed ER ? apparently the owner's initials ? a silver medallion engraved with the name "Hanna."

He also uncovered a unique version of the yellow star Jews were forced to wear by the Nazis, made out of metal instead of cloth, which researchers determined to have originated in Slovakia.

Marek Bem, a former director of the museum at Sobibor, said the first excavations began at the site in 2001, with several stages before he invited Haimi to join in 2007. He said the mapping of the 200-meter (yard) long Himmelfahrsstrasse opens the door for looking for the actual gas chambers.

"We are nearer the truth," he said. "It tells us where to look for the gas chambers."

Haimi is not allowed to take any of the items out of Poland, but he consults regularly with Yad Vashem's International Institute for Holocaust Research, which helps him interpret his findings and gives them historical perspective.

Dan Michman, head of the institute, said Haimi's research helps shed light on the "technical aspects" of the Holocaust. It also grants insight, for example, on what people chose to take with them in their final moments.

"His details are exact and that is an important tool against Holocaust denial. It's not memories, it's based on facts. It's hard evidence," he said.

But the accurate layout is Haimi's greatest contribution, allowing researchers to learn more about how it functioned, said Deborah Dwork, director of the Strassler Family Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University in Worcester, Mass.

She said some critics have suggested that the sites of former death camps are "sacred" and "should remain untouched." But she said she believes the excavation is justified. "I feel that our need for knowledge outweighs those concerns."

Once his work in Sobibor is done, Haimi hopes to move on to research at Treblinka and other destroyed death camps.

Though archaeology is usually identified with the study of ancient history, Haimi thinks that with survivors rapidly dying it could soon become a key element in understanding the Holocaust.

"This is the future research tool of the Holocaust," he said.
