New Special Education Program at MSU-Meridian

When classes begin on August 20th at MSU Meridian, there will be a new program offered that's never been at the campus before. Students will be able to take classes in Special Education. Students working on their Bachelor's, or teachers coming back to school to work on their Master's, will be able to add the special ed endorsement to their qualifications. The new cooridnator and instructor in the Special Ed Department, John Cash, who comes to Meridian from the Starkville Campus, says that his experience as a parent of an Autistic child inspired him to go into the field, and he hopes that he can pass his knowledge along.

"Instead of having to go out and search for professionals, I was able to learn under the professionals there so that I could provide services to my own child."

The addition of this program to MSU Meridian makes pursuing a career in special education much more convienent, and new student Haylee Roberts says that she's excited to be part of something new and she's glad it's near her family.

"It was convienent, it was closer to home, and I have a lot of brothers and sisters, and I wanted to be closer to them."

Mississippi State decided to add the special education program to the Meridian campus because they say there is a great need for special education teachers across the whole South, and the job outlook is quite good.

"Special education is the sixth best job opportunity in America by US News and World Report, and that is the only teaching field that is ranked in the top 50."
