Say Goodbye to the World's Largest Collection of Microcars

Microcars

?

The world's largest collection of microcars will soon be no more. Following a 22-year streak of amassing a broad variety of Lilliputian cars, collector Bruce Weiner is divesting himself of over 200 tiny vehicles at an RM auction to be held at his Madison, GA museum on February 15th and 16th, 2013.

?

Why the change in heart? Weiner relayed to Hemmings Daily that, ?My interests have moved to a different place. I?m an empty nester now, and my children don?t have the same interest in microcars, so I want to see the cars all go to new homes.?

?

The array of Goggomobils, Isettas, Voisons and numerous other now-defunct marques offers an intriguing insight-- not to mention a rare, unified perspective-- into an era when the ravages of World War II necessitated the need to engineer smaller, simpler, and thriftier means of transportation.

?

I was lucky enough to stumble on the museum several summers ago, and Weiner told me that, "It's always a hunt with microcars. You never find all of them, you never know when one exists and one doesn't, even if you read about." After encouraging me to take a spin around the 72 acre property's private track in a pristinely restored Messerchmitt, it became clear that his passion involved as much of the usual collector mentality obsessiveness as it did true affection for the pint-sized rides; though he also owned big ego supercars like the McLaren F1 and Ferrari Enzo, it was clear that microcars that captured his imagination. He also noted at the time that, "I'm usually quick to get into something, find it boring, then leave. But in my 30 years of collecting, I've never left microcars."

?

The dispersion of the world's largest collection of microcars marks what will perhaps be the last time such a comprehensive collection exists under one roof, and for that, the nichey genre will be the poorer.
