Daylight shoot-out rocks Kazakh financial capital

ALMATY (Reuters) - Kazakh police on Monday killed six members of a criminal gang in a shoot-out in an apartment block in the commercial capital Almaty, prosecutors said, in a fresh sign of surging crime in the oil-rich Central Asian nation.

The shoot-out with the armed criminals, who had barricaded themselves in an apartment, broke out in broad daylight in one of Almaty's residential areas after the gunmen refused to lay down their arms, the office of Kazakhstan's prosecutor-general said in a statement on its site www.prokuror.kz.

"All six criminals were killed when police returned fire," it said. "There were no casualties among civilians and security servicemen," it said, adding that all residents of the high-rise apartment block had been evacuated before the police operation.

Prosecutors said the same gang of criminals had killed a police officer and gravely wounded another one, stealing their weapons at the weekend. It said the gang had planned an armed robbery of a consumer goods warehouse.

Quoting police sources, local agencies said the gunmen belonged to an "extremist organization", but prosecutors said the perpetrators had been driven by criminal motives.

President Nursultan Nazarbayev this month rebuked his security services for lapses after the discovery of guns and religious literature in the garage of a house destroyed by fire near Almaty.

Eight people, including four children, died in the house fire on July 12 in the village of Tausamaly outside Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest and most prosperous city.

Prosecutors launched an investigation into "preparation of terrorism", saying that a home-made bomb might have exploded at the house.

Kazakhstan, Central Asia's largest and most successful economy, had until last year not witnessed outbursts of Islamist militancy seen in other parts of Central Asia, a former Soviet region lying to the north of Afghanistan.

But a string of blasts and shootouts have fractured an image of stability in the oil-producing country of 16.7 million people, where 70 percent of the population is Muslim.

"Establishing the autumn density of humpback whales in the inshore regions of the Western Antarctic Peninsula is crucial for understanding the role they play in this rapidly changing ecosystem," study researcher Ari Friedlaender, a scientist at the Duke University Marine Lab, said in a statement.

Friedlaender, study leader David Johnston of Duke University and their colleagues surveyed the bays and straits of the Western Antarctic Peninsula between April and June 2009 ? when summer is already drawing to a close at these high latitudes. Humpbacks (Megaptera novaeangliae) typically feed at high latitudes in the summer and then move toward the equator to breed in the winter. They were once hunted nearly to extinction, but have recovered in numbers since bans on commercial whaling have been enacted. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists humpback whales as "least concern," though they are still protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

It's not easy to get good counts of whales in the tight confines of bays and inlets, Johnston said in a statement.

"We had no idea that the whales were going to be packed up in these narrow channels and passages," he said. "We had to think on our feet a bit and use alternative sampling approaches and incorporate data from other portions of the project."

The result was a count of 371 groups of humpback whales over a 406-mile (654 kilometers) area of ocean. At their most crowded, the whales were seen at a density of 1.75 per square kilometer. (One square kilometer equals about 0.4 square miles.)

"That's higher than anyone expected," Johnston said.

That high density was seen in the relatively close quarters of Wilhelmina Bay, Antarctica. The lowest densities were seen in more open areas, the researchers reported.

The findings reveal that humpbacks spend more time than expected in Antarctica before beginning their long migrations north to the waters off of Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand and southern Africa to breed. Climate change could alter these patterns, the researchers wrote.

"The number of humpback whales we detected in these bays in the late autumn raises questions about the timing and frequency of migratory movements to breeding regions by individual whales," they wrote. "If the Gerlache Strait region remains largely ice-free in future winters, nonreproductive humpback whales could choose to remain close to large overwintering krill swarms and forego migration."

GOSHEN, Conn. (AP) ? Dozens of Native Americans wore the traditional garb of their ancestors, sang songs and beat drums on a western Connecticut farm Saturday in celebration of the birth of one of the world's rarest animals ? a white bison.

The miracle calf was officially named Yellow Medicine Dancing Boy at the elaborate ceremony at the Mohawk Bison farm in Goshen in the state's northwestern hills. It was born June 16 at the farm of fourth-generation farmer Peter Fay.

Many Native Americans consider white bison a symbol of hope and unity; some consider their births sacred events. Experts say white bison are as rare as one in 10 million.

Yellow Medicine Dancing Boy is not an albino, and Fay said DNA testing confirmed the animal's bloodlines are pure and there was no intermingling with cattle.

Lakota tribe members from South Dakota were among the hundreds of people who gathered at the celebration. Other tribal elders from the Mohawk, Seneca and Cayuga tribes participated.

Crowds patiently waited by the roadside before slowly marching into the pasture and lining up alongside a fence as the ceremony began. Children squeezed up against their parents and peered through the fence.

Some women were dressed in colorful tunics and other items indigenous to Native American culture, including bracelets, feathers and boots. Men also wore traditional costumes. Those leading the ceremony wore plain and small headdresses.

Fay, 53, runs the farm below Mohawk Mountain and invited Native Americans to the event, which also included a feast and talks by tribe elders.

"I'm almost like the calf to them because I'm the caregiver. They've been here almost every day, teaching me," said Fay, who has a herd of bison tattooed on his right shoulder.

Fay attended a sweat lodge ceremony with the elders on Friday night in Cornwall. The nearly two-hour ceremony was a way to repair damage done to their spirits, minds and bodies. It acted as a prayer for a name for the calf to come to them through the spirits.

Saturday's ceremony was held under an arbor next to a large fire, amid thunder and large dark rain clouds. Marian and Chubb White Mouse, members of the Oglala Lakota tribe in South Dakota, traveled to Goshen from Wanblee, S.D., to lead the ceremony.

Marian White Mouse told the crowd the birth of a white bison is a sign from a prophet, the White Buffalo Calf Woman, who helped them endure times of strife and famine.

"We come with one prayer, one heart and one mind," she said tearfully. "This is truly a miracle. I hope that this one prayer will keep my people together, keep all of us together."

Barbara Threecrow, an elder from the Naticoke tribe who lives in Hudson Valley, N.Y., sat holding a sacred Canupa of beaver skin containing a pipe.

"I believe this is an awakening," Threecrow said. "This is a way of telling people to remember the sacredness of all of life."

Vermont Air National Guard returns from medical trip to Africa

COLCHESTER, Vt. -

Capt. Jason Galipeau is happy to be back on U.S. soil with his two children and wife after a two-week long deployment overseas.

"I'm going to take a long hot shower and a swim in the pool," said Galipeau.

He and 31 other members of the Vermont Air National Guard just returned from West Africa where they served on a special project called "Western Accord 2012." The Guard worked in tandem with forces from Senegal, Gambia and other West African nations. It was the first mission of its kind, and an honor for the Green Mountain Boys.

"No other Guard unit has had the opportunity to participate in the multi-nation exercise on the African continent," said Galipeau.

Members hit the ground in the city of Thies, Senegal, mainly to provide civilians with medical care. A group of doctors, nurses and physicians' assistants treated approximately 2,000 people in less than a week.

"Difficult conditions, something we're not familiar with working with," said Lt. Col. Richard Lamb, describing the physical aspects of the trip. "The important part was that we were able to provide care to a people that really needed it."

The Sengalese lined up to be treated for something as simple as a toothache to as serious as diseases U.S. medics have only seen in a textbook.

"Patients that showed up with malaria, our docs got valuable knowledge on the symptoms and diagnosis of malaria, which they would not get in Vermont," said Galipeau.

The Guard hauled more than $100,000 in medications to Senegal. They hope the knowledge they imparted -- and left-over meds -- will leave the Sengalese with improved health and good memories.

Members said it makes it even easier to appreciate life in the United States.

The last time I spoke with Kim Myles, she was still reeling from her 2007 win on season two of ?HGTV Design Star.?

The designer?s career has been on overdrive in the five years since that televised coup, and recently included a gig for ApartmentGuide.com helping renters solve their small-space dilemmas and promoting that site?s ?Your Pick Your Place? sweepstakes.

Speaking earlier this week from Los Angeles, where she relocated from New York less than a month after wrapping up ?HGTV Design Star,? Myles, who?s also a licensed hair stylist, revealed one thing that hasn?t: her infectious enthusiasm for creating comfortable, fun and affordable spaces.

Q: How has life evolved since your win on ?HGTV Design Star??

A: I think I know what it?s like to be shot out of a cannon!

It started with an instantaneous cross-country move, and then becoming a public person overnight.

Q: Do you get spotted or approached on the street?

A: I do, all the time. It speaks to just how giant the HGTV fan base is. Everybody loves it and is obsessed with it.

?It?s been about learning what works on television, and developing a creative process that is compatible with television production. Because they are kind-of mutually exclusive. I had to figure out my recipe for delivering really stark befores and afters.

This is something that I can say at this point was hugely frightening and stressful.

Q: We?re talking today about small-space living. Tell me about the most challenging little place you?ve lived in, and your favorite solution there.

A: My most challenging space happens to be the one that I spent the most time in. For 12 of my 14 years as a New Yorker, I lived in a fourth-floor walk-up. It did have a lot of square footage for New York ? 700 square feet. But it had no storage. The location was great, in Astoria, Queens, right off of the N Line. The light was good but the views were not great. I was looking at the requisite brick wall.

?Apartment dwelling and renting really gets short-shifted. We tend to focus on homeowners and large spaces. But there are millions of people who rent and still want to live beautifully.

With ApartmentGuide.com, I really felt I could offer their consumer that perspective. My parents rented for my entire life. They never owned a home and we moved a lot. My first opportunity to buy a home was here in L.A. I kept it for three years and then I sold it because I am not a homeowner. I really felt tied down and locked in.

Q: So what was your favorite small-space solution in your little Queens apartment?

A: I felt really good about figuring out how to hide storage in plain sight. My favorite trick, and I employed in almost every room, is that I would cheat out a whole wall of storage (by putting it) behind floor-to-ceiling curtains that also went wall-to-wall.

What you do is, measure out a foot of depth and then floor-to-ceiling curtains, which provide luxury, softness and color. Then hang shelves behind those curtains.

Another trick that I love, and honestly it?s not sexy but I feel like it?s something that I run into over and over again: Color. I do everything in color. It?s a way to amplify your mood and uplift your spirit.

But one thing you see again and again with rentals is you don?t have any say. So here?s this sea of texture and color that maybe you don?t love. Well, put a rug down on the floor or carpet, just to get color and pattern into the space. They are available at every price-point and instantaneously change the space.

Innovation promises to cut massive power use at big data companies in a flash

ScienceDaily (July 19, 2012) ? Big data needs big power. The server farms that undergird the Internet run on a vast tide of electricity. Even companies that have invested in upgrades to minimize their eco-footprint use tremendous amounts: The New York Times estimates that Google, for example, uses enough electricity in its data centers to power about 200,000 homes.

Now, a team of Princeton University engineers has a solution that could radically cut that power use. Through a new software technique, researchers from the School of Engineering and Applied Science have opened the door for companies to use a new type of memory in their servers that demands far less energy than the current systems.

The software, called SSDAlloc, allows the companies to substitute solid state memory, commonly called flash memory, for the more expensive and energy-intensive type of memory that is now used for most computer operations.

"The biggest potential users are the big data centers," said Vivek Pai, an associate professor of computer science who developed the program with graduate student Anirudh Badam. "They are going to see the greatest improvements."

A version of SSDAlloc is already being used with high-end flash memory manufactured by Fusion-io, of Salt Lake City. Princeton has signed a non-exclusive licensing agreement with the company. Brent Compton, Fusion-io's senior director of product management, said the software "simplifies performance for developers in ways that were out of reach just a couple of years ago."

The massive server centers that support operations ranging from online shopping to social media are built around a type of computer memory called random access memory, or RAM. While very fast and flexible, RAM needs a constant stream of electricity to operate.

The power not only costs money, it also generates heat that forces the companies to spend more funds on cooling.

The Princeton engineers' program allows the data companies to substitute flash memory -- similar to chips used in "thumb drives" -- for much of their RAM. Unlike RAM, flash only uses small amounts of electricity, so switching memory types can drastically cut a company's power bill. In extreme cases, depending on the type of programs run by the servers, that reduction can be as much as 90 percent (compared to a computer using RAM alone). And because those machines are not generating as much heat, the data centers can also cut their cooling bills.

Flash memory is also about 10 times cheaper than RAM, so companies can also save money on hardware upfront, Pai said.

So how does it work?

Badam, a graduate student in computer science, said that SSDAlloc basically changes the way that programs look for data in a computer.

Traditionally, a computer program will run its operations in RAM, which is fast and efficient, but unable to store information without power. When the program needs to store information longer, or when it needs to use data that is not in the RAM, it looks to storage memory -- either flash memory or mechanical hard drives.

That is where a bottleneck occurs. The step at which the program switches to storage memory is glacially slow in computer terms. That is often the nature of the storage medium itself -- mechanical hard drives are vastly slower than RAM. But it is also the result of underlying operating systems, such as Linux or Windows, that govern how the computer searches for information.

Flash memory is much faster than a hard drive, and flash is getting faster all the time. Currently, high-end flash memory has retrieval speeds of a million requests per second. (A top mechanical hard drive's retrieval speed is about 300 requests per second.)

That discrepancy created a dilemma for flash. The physical flash memory itself was fast enough that it could operate as an extension of RAM, but the underlying retrieval system's slow speed throttled its potential.

Based on earlier research, funded in part by the National Science Foundation, Pai and Badam felt they had a technique that could universally allow flash memory to serve as an extension of RAM. Other researchers had developed more narrow techniques, but they were difficult to program and only worked for certain applications. The Princeton researchers' idea would work with any program with minimal, and relatively straightforward, adjustments.

It was an ambitious idea. Two other research teams outside of Princeton had tried unsuccessfully to create similar results, and many experts were convinced that the technique could not be done through changes in software alone.

"It did seem like a long shot," Badam said.

What Badam did was write software that allows programmers to bypass this traditional system of searching for information in storage memory. His system allows for requests for information that take advantage of flash memory's extremely fast retrieval times. Essentially, SSDAlloc moves the flash memory up in the internal hierarchy of computer data -- instead of thinking of flash as a version of a storage drive, SSDAlloc tells the computer to consider it a larger, somewhat slower, version of RAM.

"I wanted to make flash memory look like it was traditional memory," he said.

The first version of the software required programmers to write a very small percentage of their software -- Pai estimates about 1 percent -- to work with SSDAlloc. But while completing a scientific internship at Fusion-io last summer, Badam was able to refine SSDAlloc so that programmers no longer have to alter any of their code to work with the system.

"A good thing about SSDAlloc is that it does not alter the program," Badam said. "If you were using RAM and you want to use RAM, you can do that. If you want to use solid state you can use that."

Pai predicts that the need for faster memory access will continue to grow as more computing relies on the virtual cloud rather than on individual machines. The cloud, of course, must be supported by servers running those programs.

"Our system monitors what the host system is doing and moves it into and out of RAM automatically," he said. "There is a whole class of applications in which this would be used."

According to the pageant?s spokeswoman, Toi Clawson, the LDS Church always had big ambitions for the pageant. They hoped it would become ?America?s Oberammergau.? For its 50^th anniversary, the church recruited famed science-fiction writer and lifelong Mormon Orson Scott Card to revamp the script, with the hope of making it more accessible to the ?Bible-reading, non-LDS public.? And while the appeal to non-Mormons remains limited, the pageant has become a major stop on a summer-long pilgrimage undertaken by many Mormons who live out west. Ken Adams, a retiree from St. George, Utah, told me that he and the tour group he was traveling with from Utah were ?hitting all the spots? on the now well-established route, which starts with Joseph Smith?s birthplace in Vermont and ends at Nauvoo, Ill., where, in the early 1840s, Mormons built a city that, at the time, rivaled young Chicago in size.

'No relief' as sweltering temperatures slam Midwest, Northeast

From Iowa to New Hampshire, another day of extreme heat is expected to bake much of the nation. NBC's Al Roker has the forecast.

About 200 million Americans once again saw furnace-like temperatures as the latest heat wave slammed the Midwest and Northeast.?

Heat advisories were issued Tuesday throughout those areas. Detroit, for example, matched its record of?101 degrees for a July 17 (set in 1887) -- and it felt like 105, the National Weather Service reported.?

Chicago reached 99 degrees and it felt like 102, while?New York City topped out at 94 degrees.

"The jet stream has been way up to the north in the midsection of the country," TODAY meteorologist Al Roker said Tuesday. It's being kept there by what's called an upper-level ridge, and that's keeping that section of the U.S. very warm, he added.

The jet stream will drop a bit farther south next week but overall the ridge trapping heat will continue into next week, dire news for drought-hit farmers and ranchers. "There's no relief in sight for at least the next week from drought," Roker said.

As the U.S. experiences another heat wave, farmers are being hit hard by the worst drought conditions recorded since 1956 and consumers can expect to see corn prices rising. The Weather Channel's Eric Fisher reports.

The heat-trapping ridge will also "stretch out" to the west over the next week, Roker added.

Storms will bring some relief to the upper Midwest, but not enough to put a dent in the drought.?

In Chicago, the cool front should move in Tuesday night after two days around 100. Last week, the city saw three straight days of triple-digit temperatures -- and a Lake Michigan with 80-degree water along the beaches.

In New York City, the heat wave will break by Wednesday evening with the arrival of strong thunderstorms.

New York is in its fourth heat wave of the summer,?NBCNewYork.com reported Tuesday, and?Central Park has already hit 90 degrees or higher 13 times this summer -- nearly the 15 days it averages for an entire summer.

On the upside, there's still a long way to go to break Central Park's record of 39 days, set in 1993 and 1991.

Newark, N.J., has seen 18 days at 90 degrees or higher; LaGuardia Airport 17, NBCNewYork.com added.

Chicago has had it even worse: 28 days above 90?-- on track to top its record for a summer, 47 days in the 90s in 1988, WBBM-TV reported.

Washington, D.C., has had 26 days above 90 -- way ahead of its 16-17 days for this time of year, NBCWashington.com reported.

Besides scores of cities reporting record daily highs this month, several have also posted record temperatures for any day in July. Among them, reported The Weather Channel's Eric Fisher, are Chicago, Denver, Indianapolis, St. Louis and Washington, D.C.

Boston nearly joined that list on Tuesday, reaching 96 degrees -- just 2 shy of its July record.
