Michelle Pfeiffer: I Was in a Cult Pre-Fame, Forced on Dangerous Diet

Whoa. One of the biggest, most glamorous movie stars of the 80s and 90s, Michelle Pfeiffer is a 55-year-old Hollywood veteran who's had a quieter life and career with director husband David E. Kelley over the past decade or so. But in a new interview for the UK's Sunday Telegraph Stella magazine, the Oscar nominated actress reveals that she was in "a cult" during her earliest days as a struggling up-and-comer.

Without naming names, the Dangerous Liasons star says she fell in with a "very controlling" couple who put her on a diet "nobody can adhere to."

The blonde continues: "I wasn't living with them but I was there a lot and they were always telling me I needed to come more. I had to pay for all the time I was there, so it was financially very draining."

Pfeiffer moved to Los Angeles when she was 20 and called the couple "kind of personal trainers."

"They worked with weights and put people on diets," she said. The Family star said the mysterious pair believed in breatharianism -- which posits that food is unnecessary, and that true believers can subsist solely on sunlight.

Pfeiffer was eventually "saved" from the scary situation when she met her first husband, actor Peter Horton. The star had been cast in a film about the Moonies, Rev. Sun Myung Moon's cult. As she helped Horton with his research "on this cult," she realized "I was in one. . . We were talking with an ex-Moonie and he was describing the psychological manipulation and I just clicked."

Pfeiffer is now mom to adopted daughter Claudia, 20, and John, 19, her biological son with Kelley, whom she wed in 1993.

The star tells the Telegraph that she's never undergone plastic surgery to maintain her famous face. "I used to think I would never have surgery but it's really hard to say never. I'm in the 'never say never' camp now."
